MEDRC Water Research Fellows gathered at the Jordan University for Science and Technology in Irbid, Jordan to present updates to experts on their important water research. At the event, MEDRC Water Research Fellows presented their recent research to experts on a wide range of topics including:

MEDRC Research: Collaborations with Haya Water and Sultan Qaboos University
MEDRCS research department received  representatives from Haya Water earlier this month. Haya Water is an Omani Wastewater Services Company that aims to generate the maximum amount of treated effluent (recycled waste water) to be used to benefit Omani society. The discussions focused on potential collaboration on wastewater treatment research and  training. On the other hand, MEDRCs Head of Reaserch was invited earlier this month to give a lecture at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in Muscat on MEDRC contribution to the efforts towards tackling water security issues in the MENA region. This lectures was organized by the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences last October 11st, 2016. READ MORE 

MEDRC Completes Latest Jordanian Technical Mission - Focus on Small Scale Desalination Plants in the Jordan Valley

MEDRC Water Research has completed its latest Jordan Valley Technical Mission. MEDRC technical staff working closely with the Jordan Valley Authority and the Water User Associations; conducted the following activities:
  • Theoretical instruction in reverse osmosis plant operation and maintenance. The four day program was designed specially around the actual plants and conditions in the Jordan Valley. The particular focus was on the small scale desalination plants used by the agricultural sector.
  • Practical application of operations and maintenance lessons using small scale desalination plants in the area.
  • Groundwork for the development of a MEDRC guidance manual in arabic for farmers and plant operators that will support them in addressing technical problems, chemical cleaning and treatment of their plants. READ MORE
Oman: Check dams viable solution to recharge groundwater
Water is a global issue and the issue is more pronounced in arid zones. With taking steps to stop over abstraction, the other important way to conserve water is to increase the groundwater recharge whenever any such opportunity comes. Arid zones rarely have rainfall, but some places like Salalah is fortunate to have the phenomenon of monsoon which gives opportunity to conserve water and recharge the groundwater. READ MORE
 
Oman: Groundwater salinity threatens farms in Batinah
Excessive groundwater depletion has increased water salinity, affecting farms especially in North and South Batinah governorates - the Sultanate’s main agricultural areas according to the experts. More than 53 per cent of Oman’s agricultural areas are situated in the Batinah governorates. READ MORE

Oman: Haya Water boss says Oman needs sewerage expansion
The head of Oman’s leading wastewater utility has said the country will need to expand wastewater treatment capacity more than five times over to meet its needs in the decades to come. READ MORE

Oman: Haya water presented the latest developments on its wastewater project
Haya Water presented the latest developments on its wastewater project. The company also elaborated on the current and future projects with regards to wastewater and treated effluent schemes at a meeting earlier this month. Haya Water is working hard to deliver 80 per cent of the wastewater service in the wilayats of Muscat governorate by 2022. READ MORE

Oman: Wastewater services to 80 per cent of Muscat Governorate by 2022
Haya Water is currently treating approximately 170,792 cubic metres of sewage water a day in Muscat Governorate. According to the CEO, the number of customers who have connected their properties to the sewage networks in Muscat Governorate in 2016 stood at 86,329 with an increase of 23 per cent, while 17,035 customers have utilised the same service in the remaining governorates, except Dhofar and Sohar. Oman: Tender to develop water desalination plants soon
A prequalification tender to build several new water desalination plants located across Oman, including one each in Salalah and Sharqiyah regions, will be floated by Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) soon, according to a statement. READ MORE

Oman: Haya Water’s two major sea outfall projects to be ready by year-end
Around 85 per cent of the two sea outfall projects in Darsait and Al Athaiba has been achieved and the project is expected to be completed by end of current year, Haya Water said in a press statement. READ MORE

Kuwait: Climate Change Impacts
Kuwait is facing a wide range of climate change challenges including sea level rise, water scarcity, desertification and loss of diversity. Kuwait is characterized by high temperature, high humidity and arid lands resulting in seriously degraded soil and land damage in addition to salt intrusion in the aquifers affecting the small scale agricultural lands thus enhancing the food security threat in the region. Syria: How we saved climate-smart seeds from the conflict
Since war broke out in Syria, 11 million people have fled their homes. In 2012, the turmoil reached the doorstep of ICARDA Agricultural Research Station in Tel Hadya near Aleppo in Syria. Almost 40 years of research on crops, livestock, soil and water, that was supporting sustainable agriculture development projects in over 40 countries, had come into the direct line of fire. Tunisia: A national company is targeting a seawater desalination project
The Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) aims to build a seawater desalination plant in the south of the country, specifically in Gabes. This project, is part of CGT green projects that aim at preserving the country's water resources. READ MORE

Overview of Composting Methods
The composting process is a complex interaction between the waste and the microorganisms within the waste. The microorganisms that carry out this process fall into three groups: bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes. Actinomycetes are a form of fungi-like bacteria that break down organic matter. READ MORE

Water and Desalination: International companies
Some major companies, such as Siemens (SIEGY) and General Electric (GE) have water desalination divisions that are only a small part of their businesses, but there are other companies which are more of a desalination pure play. About a dozen companies are involved in the treatment of water, and several of them have specifically targeted desalination. READ MORE

US: Using TOC analysis to spur safer drinking water
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency continues to evolve the Safe Drinking Water Act to protect the public from both harmful microorganisms and disinfectant byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water. DBPs are created when naturally-occurring organic matter, measured as total organic carbon, or TOC, reacts with disinfectants added to control microorganisms present in source water. Several DBPs are suspected carcinogens and are therefore regulated tightly. READ MORE


US: Public support for the WATER Act gains momentum as groups come together to stand up for the human right to water
A group of 17 advocacy organizations announced that 331,036 people have signed petitions in support of a bill introduced by Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich-13) to address the water quality and affordability problems plaguing many U.S. communities. The WATER Act will distribute up to $35 billion in dedicated funding to community water and sewer systems through the State Revolving Funds, creating up to 1 million new jobs. READ MORE

France: SEDIF and Veolia inaugurate ServO, the unique management center for the largest water distribution service
ServO, the public water service management center, the fruit of 6.3 million euros investment, was designed by Veolia Eau d’Ile-de-France for SEDIF to centralize and consolidate all operation data, supervise and plan service management from the resource to the tap, and to suggest strategies to the operators to optimize energy consumption, environmental impact and operation costs. Chile: The heavy price of Santiago's privatised water
When it comes to water, Chile is failing its citizens. In Santiago, the nation’s capital, millions of people are regularly left without running water for days at a time and experts are warning of water scarcity to come across the country as temperatures rise and glaciers retreat. Iran’s worsening water crisis has spread desperation across this parched farm belt. Families watch sons leave the villages to hunt for scarce work in the cities. Crops are abandoned. The elderly and infirm forego medical care because they barely have enough money to survive. READ MORE

Italy: Scientists and policymakers meet at EC JRC to develop their skills in evidence-informed policymaking for the Water-Energy-Food nexus
INGSA collaborated with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre on their recent workshop. Over a hundred participants from 45 European and African countries assembled at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre site in Ispra, Italy for a capacity-building event dedicated to improving skills in the use of evidence for policy. Brazil: The importance of coordination in water resources management
Due to rapid urban expansion and a growing population of (currently) about 40 million, the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, faces a number of water-related problems, such as water scarcity, decreasing water quality and growing conflicts between multiple water users. In 1991 the state adopted an IWRM approach to water management and incorporated the principles of integration, decentralisation, and public participation into a new water policy. READ MORE

Kazakhstan: Kazakh government signals ambition to desalinate water from Caspian Sea
The project is to be jointly implemented by the state-owned oil and gas companies KazMunayGas, and OzenMunayGaz, and will be located in Karakiyan, Mangistau, in the country's south west corner. The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed inland body of water on Earth by area, and is a valuable source of water for the country. READ MORE

CGIAR, IWMI & AQUASTAT: Collaborate to provide municipal wastewater data
The CGIAR Research Programme on Water, Land and Ecosystems, led by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), and the Land and Water Division of FAO are collaborating to collect, analyze and validate the best available data on municipal wastewater production, collection, treatment, discharge and direct use for irrigation purposes. The results of this collaboration are available in AQUASTAT. READ MORE

Paris Agreement to enter into force in a month thanks to EU ratification
The Paris Agreement has officially passed the necessary threshold to begin the process for its official entry into force - meaning the Agreement will officially enter into force globally in a month's time. In doing so, it will become the first comprehensive climate agreement that commits all countries to taking climate action with the goal of keeping global warming "well below" the 2 degrees Celsius limit. Innovation: Wind-powered Water Seer pulls 11 gallons of clean drinking water from thin air
A new device that relies on simple condensation to collect clean water from the atmosphere promises to provide up to 11 gallons of safe drinking water without an external power source, greenhouse gas emissions, or adverse environmental impacts. SDGs are a new focus for restoring water quality and river ecosystems
Governments around the world have adopted the Sustainable Development Goals to stop and reverse the decline of water quality and the destruction of freshwater ecosystems. They have set ambitious targets to “improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials”, and to “protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes”. How we help countries track and report on the Sustainable Development Goals on water, sanitation and hygiene
Over the last few years, the international community has been busy establishing new indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which officially replaced the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for the period 2015-2030. SDG #6:Ensure access to water and sanitation for all, seeks to reduce the incidence of malnutrition, communicable diseases, and inequities that are directly related to lack of access to improved sources of drinking water (affecting 663 million people worldwide) and sanitation (which 2.4 billion people still lack). The MEP Water Group session held on September 28 focused on the topic of “Water and Jobs”. Topics included the water-related economy, as well as water related issues such as migration, energy and gender equity. One example of this is wastewater, which the United Nations will be holding their water conference on. At first glance, growing fruit in the desert sounds like an awfully good way to feed a mushrooming global population and adapt to the worst effects of climate change. Culligan introduces reverse osmosis and membrane bioreactor systems
Italian water treatment firm Culligan has introduced a new skid-mounted seawater RO desalination solution, SW Evo, and a containerised membrane bio reactor system. The SW Evo can produce 480 m3/d of fresh water from feed waters with up to 42,000 ppm of salinity, and uses an average of 2kWhH/m3 of energy by employing the latest energy recovery technology. READ MORE

    The concept has been in currency for almost a decade.
