"IT HAS DONE US GOOD"
Liberty Worship Center

Titus Wamahe, (second from the left), with four of the church members that have done the Veritas training and the Veritas staff.
My name is Titus Wamahe. I am married and my wife is called Phoebe Wamahe. She is Kenyan and she’s currently in Kenya visiting some relatives. We got married in 2011 August and this year marks our five year anniversary. We have two children; Gabriel who is three years old and Jude who is one and half years old. I am the pastor of Liberty Worship Center. We are located in Pumude Cell, Northern division, Mbale Municipality. I have been in this Church since 2006. We began in the Northern division hall but because of the limitations of the hall we looked around for a place to put the church. We have been at Pumude Cell since 2013. We have a regular church attendance of over 60 adult members and on the whole, about 80 members. There are so many children that we have not taken count and we even have a challenge of space. We are trusting God to put a structure behind the church for them to have their own space.

I basically work in Church. I was burdened to join the ministry when I was in Senior Six. The burden was too heavy in my heart. I decided to be active in church full time. Of Course at that time I thought that it would be a temporary burden because I had a passion for education, I wanted to study to be a lawyer. I thought that I would be able to accomplish that little burden short time but it has increasingly become the order of my life to be in ministry. So I do full time ministry.

I have no formal theological training aside from a few basic bible correspondence courses. However, there was a need in my life. I had wanted to be part of bible school but here in Mbale the flexibility of the Bible Schools has been a challenge because you have to be there full time and they are also expensive. I do full time ministry and my church is not able to pay for my Bible training. The Facilitator, Peter Makhafu is a personal friend of mine. He told me about Veritas and I loved it. I then invited him to True Worship Church and he shared with the other church members. The church members who were ready, started a class and I joined them. I love to learn a lot and I think learning does not end. Even if I had done a degree in theology I would still have loved to do the Veritas training because of it's flexibility and the opportunity to acquire more knowledge.

The Impact…

The Veritas Training is so practical. It has widened my perspective. The modules take us through various points in time in which the Bible was written. It is so wide and has thus widened my understanding of the Bible. It has built confidence in my life because I know how to handle given texts in the Bible. There are times, when I would just skip over some things and console myself that after all, "I can share the Gospel from another part of the scriptures and someone understands instead of looking at this complicated part of the scriptures. Why should I go there if I can still share it?" I’ve now got confidence. I can exegete every part of the scriptures and I can understand, interpret and easily share from any part of the Bible. So Veritas has built my confidence in approaching any part of the scriptures. It has really given an overview of the Bible, it has done us good.

Peter Makhafu, the Veritas coordinator and facilitator of Mbale region lays hands, prays for and commissions the participants who completed Module Four.

The dynamic Church life

We have Bible study every Tuesday and I always see that the people who have gone through Veritas have a clear approach to the scriptures. They help teach others. The kind of Bible study we have here is participatory, everyone is teacher as well as a student. I have observed that those that have gone through the training have more confidence. During th Bible study I hear whispers ‘that is now exegesis.’ When someone makes a radical conclusion on a scripture they object, request for deeper understanding and put to use the skill of exegesis learnt in Module one. What they have learnt has built them.

When it comes to Character, they have realised that they need to apply the scriptures. There are better relationships especially among those who did the training.  When it comes to relating to people, handling challenges, disagreements, conflicts, one saying this about the other, they know how to handle that. For instance; they understand that we are a family of believers, from different backgrounds and the central reason of being together is to share the message of Christ and that Christ be glorified in our lives. In case of conflict or slander, it not allowed to continue. The way is made clear for Christ (Christ-likeness). The confidence and focus that Christ is the center of our family as a church is the foundation for us to clear every distraction that hinders Christ-likeness in our midst. To this end, we easily talk, the idea is that we do not keep anything in our hearts that would cause Christ not to have his way in our lives. We encourage dialogue.

Going Forward…

Even after finishing Module Four, I still have to go back and go through the books. I have asked the facilitator to allow me to sit in for various modules and this will enable me to do my personal revision. I definitely would like to be a facilitator. The opportunity and need for facilitators was communicated by our facilitator. There is need for the knowledge to be passed on across the Church. There is a knowledge gap. People are limited in the interpretation of the Bible for instance people pick out one or two verses and then they run with them and cannot relate them well with the whole counsel of the Bible. It is very important that this knowledge goes all around not only in my church but all over. However, it is my desire that all the members at my Church will have this knowledge. We have a plan to start a Module one class. We also  have a discipleship program however,  the Veritas training does both and put that advantage to use. A person who has acquired this training is easier to pastor because they are self driven and practical.
