2nd Annual Heart of Georgia Air Show

This year the Heart of Georgia Air Show will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the MGA aviation school and the 50th anniversary of the Heart of Georgia Regional Airport. The airshow will be held November 5th on the MGA Aviation Campus in Eastman, Ga. The free event will feature performances by: Gary Ward, Greg Koontz and the Alabama Boys, Larry King, Chefpitts Airshows, Silver Wing Parachute Demonstration Team, and the Georgia State Patrol - Helicopter water bucket simulation. This family event will also feature STEM activities, a flight simulator, food, children’s inflatable toys, and interactive exhibits for aviation enthusiasts of all ages.

Middle Georgia State University is growing, and expanding its aviation programs to the Macon-Bibb county downtown airport. “In expanding the flight instruction to Macon, Middle Georgia State anticipates attracting additional students from the Middle Georgia and Atlanta areas who seek the flight instruction offered by the state’s only public higher education aviation program” Dean Adon Clark said.
And there is still more to celebrate. Middle Georgia State University and University president Christopher Blake were named Gold Institution and President of the Year at the University System of Georgia Chancellor’s Service Excellence Awards on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The Heart of Georgia Air Show takes place at the MGA Eastman Campus, 71 Airport Rd Eastman, GA 31023, on November 5 from 10:00 am-3:00 pm.

Space Working Group December 8th

Dr. Bobby Braun has chaired the Georgia Space Working Group for the last few years, and his clear focus and leadership were instrumental in bringing together our small but growing group.

We are not the only ones who deeply appreciate Professor Braun’s talent and leadership, which leads our group to a new transition.  Dr. Braun will be the Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO, effective January 2017.  We wish him continued success in his new position and look forward to continued collaborations.

Our new chair is Dr. Jud Ready, Principal Research Engineer at GTRI and Deputy Director of Georgia Tech’s Institute for Materials.  Jud pursues research in energy, aerospace and applications of nano-materials and holds 7 patents for innovative products in these areas.  He will begin leading the Georgia Space Working Group at our  next meeting on December 9th from 10-12  at  the Electric Cities Conference Room on the 8th Floor of the Centergy Building at 75 Fifth Street, Atlanta GA 30308.

Veterans and Georgia’s Aerospace Industry

Veterans Day honors America's 22 million military veterans for their patriotism and willingness to serve the common good.

According to the Veterans Administration just 7.3 % of all living Americans have served in the military at some point in their lives.  For men, it’s 13.4% and for women just 1.4%.   But when you look at the Aerospace Industry, you will find a large percentage of veterans working in every aspect of our industry.   Here in Georgia we have both a large veteran population (750,000) and a large number of aerospace companies who employ them.

In May 2016, Forbes magazine listed the top 15 companies nationally that employ veterans for skilled labor.  Aerospace and Engineering firms top the list with Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Boeing holding the top three positions.  In fact, of the 15 firms listed, Georgia has locations of 13 of these firms.

Did you know 12.5% of Delta Air Lines employees are veterans?  That’s 10,000 veterans (2014 numbers) out of 80,000 total employees.  And more than half of Delta’s current pilots are veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Logistics giant UPS typically hires as many as 5,000 veterans each year and employs
more than 25,000 men and women who are U.S. veterans. Veterans make up 8% of the UPS workforce.

Military Friendly.com’s “Top 100 Military Friendly companies for 2016” list includes Gulfstream Aerospace where 26% of their employees are veterans, and 29% of their new hires.  Southwest Airlines also made their list with 13% veterans, and 6% of new hires.

Georgia’s aerospace industry is one of the most successful in the country.  Our skilled aerospace workforce includes a large number of veterans who contribute to the industry’s success each day.   Please take a moment on Veterans Day to say thank you to all those who have served our country, and who continue to serve our aerospace industry.

The Air Force Office of Scientific Research awarded Professor Marcus Holtzinger one of 58 Young Investigator Program awards for his work in object detection and tracking in space.

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) announced that Professor Brian German and Professor Karen Feigh had been selected as Associate Fellows for 2017.  These two professors are among 140 selected for this national honor, recognizing their strong professional contribution to aerospace.  They will receive their designations at the AIAA SciTech Forum held in Texas in January.

Congratulations to all!
