Reporting Your Child's Absence

To report your child's absence from school, please call the school office at 916-770-8845 and press 1.
After the message, please leave:
  1. Your child's name (Spelling the first and last name).
  2. The date of the absence.
  3. The reason for the absence.
The safety of our students and staff is the District’s highest priority. With that in mind, Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District (DCJESD) is now requiring fingerprinting through the Department of Justice (DOJ) for all adult chaperones planning on attending any off campus field trip(s).  This new practice is an extension of the District’s policy that formerly only required fingerprint clearance for chaperones attending overnight field trips.
Important points to know if you’re considering volunteering for a field trip:
  • When getting fingerprints done you must bring the District Livescan form with you (which you will receive from the school/district).
  • Clearance may take as little as 2 days, or longer than a month.  It is recommended that you get your fingerprints completed at least 30 days prior to the planned field trip.
  • You only have to be fingerprinted once with DCJESD.  Once the District receives your fingerprint clearance, your file will remain open until you request to have it closed.  Your prints will carry over from year to year.
  • All fees paid go directly to DOJ ($32) and the rolling agency ($17).  The District does not receive any portion of the fees collected.
  • If financial assistance is needed to cover the cost of fingerprinting, please schedule a meeting with the school principal, so they can assist you in obtaining your fingerprint clearance.  We do not want the cost of fingerprinting to be a barrier for you to participate in your child’s education.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping our students safe.  If you have any questions please feel free to call the school office or the District’s Human Resources Department at 770-8800, we are happy to assist and answer any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District

Life skills will get you college ready!

NOVEMBER'S LIFE SKILLS - Believing in yourself.

You Are Special ~ By: Max Lucado

You Are Special tells the story of Punchinello, the wooden Wemmick. The inhabitants of Wemmicksville spend their days placing stickers on each other. Golden star stickers are put on the talented, smart, and attractive Wemmicks. Gray dot stickers are for those who make mistakes and don't stand out. Punchinello, despite his best efforts to get stars from the other Wemmicks, is covered in gray dots and begins to believe he'll never be worth anything. Then one day he visits Eli the woodcarver, his creator, and everything changes.  Max Lucado's beautiful story reminds us that we are all unique, special and worthy just the way we are.

Messages and Deliveries

To minimize classroom interruptions and protect instructional time, the office staff is not able to deliver personal messages or items (i.e., lunch money, books, planners, PE Clothing, etc.) during the school day.  The office will only deliver messages in the case of an actual emergency.

Miscellaneous items brought to the office for students will be placed in the “Student Pick Up” area.  If your child thinks a delivery may be made they are encouraged to check with the office.

Lunches brought in for students will be placed on the “Lunch Cart” and brought out to the lunch area during your child’s lunch time.

From the Nurse ~ Lice Prevention

Lice can be a problem for any family.  Head lice are tiny insects that live in human hair.  They hatch from small eggs, called "nits" which are attached to the base of individual hairs.  Nits are very small, white or yellow oval objects that cannot be easily removed.  They are not to be confused with dandruff, which is very flaky and easily removed.  The eggs hatch in about ten days, with the new lice reaching maturity in about two weeks.  Head lice are transmitted through close personal contact such as "head to head" contact or by sharing personal items such as combs, hairbrushes, hats, or other head coverings.

The sign of head lice infestation are persistent itching of the head and back of the neck and appearance of head lice or nits in the hair.

To treat lice, please buy a lice shampoo recommended by the pharmacy of your physician.  Follow directions on the bottle exactly.  Retreat in 7 - 10 days to kill any newly hatched lice.  Lice shampoos are not 100% effective.  Thus, it is essential that all nits on the hair after shampooing be removed.  If not, re-infestation can occur.  Nits can be removed by combing them out with the special comb that comes with the shampoo.  Thoroughly comb one small section of hair at a time (this process can take 2 hours if done properly).  You can also pull nits off the hair strands with your fingernails or cut off individual hair strands.

Please notify the school if your child has head lice.  Parents must provide a note verifying treatment.  The nurse/health assistant or office staff must check your child after treatment.

For further information regarding the treatment of lice, please contact the school nurse at 916-770-8800 ext. 3136.
Substitute LVN/RN Opportunity
The Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District is looking for caring RN/LVN's that would like to be placed on our substitute Health Staff List.  There are times throughout the year, when we have a need for a substitute RN/LVN (with current licensing) to help cover health needs when one of our staff members are out unexpectedly.  We have students with a range of needs (Diabetic, Diastat, GTube, etc.) who need assistance during school hours.  Training would be provided.  Please contact Sandie Faulk at 916-770-8855 if you are interested in learning more about becoming a substitute RN/LVN in our Health Department.

From the Nurse ~ November is Diabetes Awareness Month
1 out of 11 Americans have Diabetes. Diabetes is a metabolic disease that results in prolonged periods of high blood sugar.  There are two main types of Diabetes.  Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and Type 2 Diabetes (T2D).  Approximately 10% of diabetics (people with diabetes) have Type 1 Diabetes and about 90% of diabetics have Type 2 Diabetes. While both can result in high blood sugar, they are different.
Diabetics have problems with insulin either not being produced (T1D) or not enough being produced or used efficiently (T2D).  Insulin is needed to move sugar in the blood into the cells to provide energy for the body. When the body cannot move sugar into the cells the sugar stays in blood causing high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Diabetes is not contagious.

Type 1 Diabetes (formerly known as Juvenile Diabetes) is an autoimmune disorder. It is often diagnosed in childhood.  In T1D, the body’s immune system attacks the insulin producing cells in the body. The onset of this disorder has nothing to do with diet or sugar intake.  Scientists are unsure as to why this occurs. T1D is treated with insulin.  There is no cure for Type 1 Diabetes (YET).

Type 2 Diabetes is the most common form of diabetes.  It often occurs in adults.  In Type 2 Diabetes the body does not produce enough insulin to meet the bodies’ needs or does not use the insulin in the body effectively.  Type 2 Diabetics can manage their blood sugar through diet, exercise and medication.

Signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) are:
-Increased thirst  -Increased urination
-Increased hunger   -Unexplained weight loss
-Irritability  -Weak and tired feeling

Please Help Us Be Courteous and Safe Neighbors

If your child is arriving and departing from school using private transportation, we would great appreciate your assistance in easing congestion, ensuring safety, and maximizing efficiency:
  • Carpool with others in your circle of friends, family, or neighbors.  Carpooling is not only great for the environment but also easier on your gasoline budget.
  • Follow all posted speed limit and traffic signs.
  • Be considerate of the neighborhood.  Stay clear of private driveways, roads, and property (e.g. Vineyard, Cook Riolo and PFE Road are public, while Almond Blossom Lane and  Glen Lane are private roads)
  • Use designated loading/unloading zones and parking lots.  Pull forward as space becomes available in the loading/unloading zones.  Students are encouraged to wait for their ride closer to the stop sign.
  • Do not use the District Support Services (DDS) parking lot for drop off or pick up.  That lot is not designed to be used for this purpose.
  • Talk to your child about how you will be moving your car along the peninsula, all the way forward, when picking them up from school.  Tell them to walk down to the end and wait for your car to meet them.  This will keep the flow of traffic moving for all families in the pick up line.
