Dr. Stephen Norris Highlights Successful Okanagan Sport Leadership Conference

Oct 19, 2016
By: Brad Duquette

The Okanagan Sport Leadership Conference is a one-day Sport Conference, hosted by PacificSport Okanagan, designed for coaches, sport administrators and practitioners to provide sport education opportunities and hands-on training experiences.

The conference also hosts a sport tradeshow that includes local organizations and businesses that brought together a team of sport experts to offer interactive seminars on a variety of relevant topics.

Spanning 14 years now, the annual conference has successfully featured experts such as Dr. Dean Kriellars (Canadian Sport for Life), Ryan Walters (former NHL player), Allison McNeill (former coach women’s national basketball team) and has delivered on a variety of topics relating to sport performance and sport development. This year, the conference was held Saturday, October 15 at the Parkinson Activity Centre in Kelowna and featured outstanding presentations and active workshops by:

  • Dr. Stephen Norris (Developing CS4L Communities),
  • Dr. Shaunna Taylor (A Sport Parent’s Guide, Sport Psych 101),
  • Chris Collins (Strength Session/Gym Orientation 101),
  • Vanessa Milot (Utilizing Joga for Rehabilitation), Presenter's Notes
  • Lise Dallien MacMillan (Myofacial Techniques and Tools), Presenter's Notes
  • Kurt Innes (Performance Sport Map for Parents),
  • Okanagan Elite Athlete Panel feat: Tristan Smyth, Brittney Page, Trevor Stirling

PacificSport Okanagan Executive Director, Shaunna Taylor, was impressed with the quality presenters and participants at this year’s conference: “I had the opportunity to reconnect with the amazing coaches, administrators and exhibitors who attend this conference year after year, as well as networking and having meaningful discussions with college and university students who are just entering the sector. It was exciting to facilitate sport leadership in a cross-sectoral panel (sport system, school district, health authority, City of Kelowna), in order to address some of the ways we can work together to strengthen our sport and physical activity community in the Okanagan. As always, staff did an amazing job creating a quality event, and thank you to the capable and enthusiastic volunteers who came through to make it a success once again.”

ARTICLE OF THE MONTH:
5 reasons you want your kid to be a multi-sport athlete

Oct 19, 2016

So many of us have done the Saturday relay race: karate to soccer game to basketball practice. From softball to swim team. Baseball practice to a hockey tournament.

When my kids were young, the world of sports and activities was their oyster. They played multiple sports, tried on things to see what fit while we drove from one side of town to the other, coordinating calendars, resolving scheduling conflicts and keeping all the local drive-thru fast-food joints in business with to-and-fro dining in the mini-van.

A few seasons of soccer, overlapping with the start of CYO basketball, which overlapped with the start of Little League season. Mix in the odd volleyball camp, rec department tennis class and some middle school track and you've got a drawer full of old team pictures, a lot of participation trophies and a whole lot of days on the snack schedule.

Then maybe that club coach asked for a larger commitment, or the select team came calling. Maybe the schedule just wasn't working anymore and it was too tough to squeeze in multiple practices and games each week around homework and band or group projects.

SPORT DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

PacificSport Supports Early Childhood Educators in their Understanding of Physical Literacy

PacificSport strongly believes that developing physical literacy is necessary for all ages and it is important for Early Childhood Educators to understand how they play a vital role in each child’s overall development of fundamental movement skills.

Are you looking for ways/ideas to enhance movement skills with children in your programs?

PacificSport Okanagan delivers many workshops valley-wide that show practical examples and an overall understanding of ways to incorporate fundamental movement skills into any daily activity plan. It is important to develop physical literacy at the younger demographic, so that children can move with confidence and competence in a variety of different settings, either for everyday physical activity, sport or the performing arts.

We deliver workshops that support ECE professional development by providing FUN and practical ideas to enhance children’s movements through purposeful play, games & activities.

We recently conducted a survey at previous workshops and ECE's used the following adjectives to describe their learning experience with us: fun, creative, informative, encouraging, interactive & meaningful!
