CloudCalc Newsletter for
September/October 2016

Here are the developments during the past two months in the world of Structural Analysis in the Cloud:

  • On October 5, 2106, Tom Van Laan, CloudCalc, CEO was invited to guest-lecture in the Introduction to Finite Element Analysis course at Rice University, speaking about the functionality and architecture of CloudCalc.  Thank you to Professor Satish Nagarajaiah for extending the invitation.

Software Update News:
In September we delivered the 32st update of the software since its initial launch in June, 2014.  Remember – since CloudCalc is delivered on the cloud, you are automatically up to date every time every time you access the software, without having to install anything new.  And our updates are always upward compatible, so you never have to convert old models to run on the latest version of the software.
  • Version 1.02.12 –Unlimited Number of Static Load Cases
The highlight of this release is the removal of the previous limitation on the number of Static Load Cases that could be analyzed in a single run.

In the past the user was limited to four Static Load Cases per analysis, that limit has now been effectively removed.  The previous limitation was put in place to protect against analyses with a large number of load cases from timing out during communication between the cloud and the host device, but the large job optimization that was done for Release 1.02.11 has all but eliminated that concern.

An Engineer’s Guide to Oktoberfest

Let’s calculate the force required to lift those steins…
Fluid dynamics, anyone?

Earlier this month I continued my travels in search of engineering topics by visiting Munich during Oktoberfest.  I went to Munich with my wife and friends, intent on seeing all the sights that would intrigue any engineer: the Deutsches Museum (the world’s largest museum dedicated to engineering, science, and technology), the Glockenspiel in the Rathaus (a wonder of mechanical engineering), and maybe the Allianz Arena – home of Bayern München and one of the prettiest football stadiums anywhere.  I was sure that I would find many topics for a blog article on this trip.

But it seemed like every time I started out to see something on my list, somebody popped a beer stein in my hand, distracting me from my goal.  It’s funny how that works, especially in Munich, especially in October. Continue reading →

In honor of the season, we are proud to reprise this blog article from the past:

Happy Halloween: Nature’s Greatest Structural Engineer

Is it Real, or is it CloudCalc?

Only the Spider Knows for Sure Well it’s Halloween (and how appropriate — this is my 13th blog post!), so I’ve been trying to think of a seasonally appropriate structural engineering topic for this week’s CloudCalc blog.  In order to get inspiration, I walked down my street looking…Read more
