November 2016
Dear Friends,

The latest edition of Khabar, our annual newsletter, is out. A few highlights of this year's issue are Prof. Lawrence Cohen's look-back at his five-years of directorship at the ISAS, Prof. Robert Goldman on his journey to becoming a Sanskrit professor at Cal, and professor of music, Prof. Bonnie Wade on bringing South Asian music to UC Berkeley. I hope you will take the opportunity to read these as well as other articles in Khabar. Please click on the box on the right to read it.

In other news, we are happy to report that the Subir & Malini Chowdhury Center for Bangladesh Studies in partnership with the American Institute for Bangladesh Studies (AIBS) and the US Embassy in Dhaka hosted five faculty members from top universities in Bangladesh to participate in a program focused on academic Research Writing and Publishing in October 2016. This program brought six faculty members from Bangladeshi institutions of higher education to be in residence for one week at the Chowdhury Center, where they took part in workshops on research methodologies, writing, and the publishing process led by UC Berkeley faculty. Faculty arrived in Berkeley and were in residence from October 11-19, 2016. After the week at Berkeley, Bangladeshi faculty traveled to Madison, Wisconsin for the 45th annual South Asia Conference  where they attended a pre-conference on October 20, 2016 titled, "From the Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals" and presented their papers in progress. The final product, as a result of this program, will be an academic paper that can be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. The workshop was very well received. We are very grateful to Professors Isha Ray, Clare Talwalker, Raka Ray, Poulomi Saha, Abhishek Kaicker, Pradeep Chhibber and doctoral candidates in Political Science Anustubh Agnihotri and Anirvan Chowdhury for all their help in leading the various sessions and helping us make this workshop a resounding success. Thanks also to Adnan Malik for his help in introducing the visiting faculty to UC Berkeley's extensive library system. Please visit the workshop website here for the agenda, paper abstracts, photos, as well as to read Program Assistant, Sridevi Prasad's summary of the workshop.
