Hello Colleague, here is Nova's November 2016 e-bulletin!

In this bulletin you'll find details of a wide range of news, events, funding and training for the voluntary sector in and around the Wakefield District. We regularly update the website so please do check on a frequent basis in order to keep up to date. 

Remember: if you are a Nova member you can send in your own events, training, news and jobs through the members area on the website. 
 

Nova News

Alison's Leaving Do

This is a quick reminder that Alison Haskins' leaving do is this Friday 18 November in the Minor Hall at Unity Works from 4.00pm - 7.00pm. The bar will be open and nibbles will be provided. We hope you can join us. 


New Bossa Nova!

As of 21 November, Ian Cockerill will be Nova's Chief Executive Officer. As part of the role, Ian will be taking over the Nova CEO Twitter account, so make sure you follow @BossaNovaWD for all of the CEO updates. 


We support the Living Wage

Nova is proud to be an accredited Living Wage Employer. Having become a Living Wage employer in 2014, we are pleased to announce that we will be increasing our hourly rate of pay in line with the Living Wage Foundation’s newly recommended rate as of the 1 May 2017. The new rate as announced by the Living Wage Foundation on 31 October 2016 will apply to all our staff over 18 and we will be paying at least  £8.45 per hour.
 

Don't forget about our offer!

We offer 8 hours of consultancy free every year to Full Nova members (there's no rollover). After that consultancy is available on a sliding fee scale based on your organisations income. Get in touch to discuss what we can help you with. Call and ask for a Nova Adviser on 01924 367418.
 

Launch of the VCS Community Safety Network

The launch of the Wakefield District VCS Community Safety Network took place at Lightwaves Community Centre on 11 October. The network has been set up with a small amount of funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner West Yorkshire to facilitate engagement with the Community Safety Partnership (CSP). The first VCS Community Safety Network e-bulletin has been published. Please subscribe to the e-bulletin and share where you feel appropriate.

Gasped Community Rehab Programme

During 2016, Gasped has delivered three Community Rehabilitation Programmes. Gasped is now planning to deliver three more, starting in the middle of January 2017. Gasped has developed a Community Rehabilitation Programme for people with substance and alcohol issues. The programme is available to anyone who lives in the Wakefield District and is aged over 18. One of the differences between the Gasped programme and a residential rehabilitation programme is that the Gasped programme allows you to stay at home, in an environment you are familiar with, close to family and friends. The programme includes a small 12 week group that brings your peers and families together. For further information about the programme please ring Gasped on 01924 787501.
 

Charity Governance Awards 2017 are open for entry – win £5000!

Entries are now open to the Charity Governance Awards 2017 – the UK awards that recognise and reward good charity governance. The 7 categories focus on impact, board diversity, turnarounds, harnessing risk and new for this year digital. Each category offers a £5000 cash prize. You can enter online for free until 13 January 2017. The winners will be announced at the invite-only free awards ceremony drinks reception on 24 May 2017.


Age UK - The Big Knit Campaign

Age UK Wakefield District is urging knitters across the district to take part in the 13th Big Knit Campaign. The joint campaign between Age UK and Innocent Smoothies is to help raise money to ensure vulnerable older people keep warm during winter. Knitters of all ages can get involved and make lots of tiny woolly hats for the top of the smoothie bottles. For every woolly hat knitted, innocent will donate 25p to Age UK Wakefield District to be used on its Winter Warmth project. The target for Age UK Wakefield District is 25,000 hats - raising a massive £6,250!

Would you like to take on a student volunteer?

Wakefield College is on the hunt for new placements in the Care and Early Years Sector. Students require a voluntary placement as part of their qualification. Charities Against Fraud Website

Charities Against Fraud is a new website which has launched to help charities protect themselves against fraud. The website lists resources and organisations that help combat fraud.

Police and Crime Commissioners Third Sector Conference

Mark Burns-Williamson the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire is pleased to be able to announce the arrangements for his annual conference for the third sector, organised in collaboration with the Wakefield Community Safety Partnership. The aims of the conference are:

  • To enable a wider third sector audience to engage with the PCC
  • To receive a report about the work of the Third Sector Advisory Group
  • To discuss the role of the sector in promoting the involvement of victims and offenders in the design and development of services
  • To support the development of district based third sector networks

Carers Rights Day

Carers Rights Day aims to bring organisations together to help carers to get the support they need to bring improvements to their caring role. A free buffet lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Volunteer Managers' Forum

World Aids Day - Forgotten Voices?

Yorkshire MESMAC invites you to attend an event for World AIDS Day on Thursday 1 December 2016. Go along and listen to new perspectives on HIV and how it has affected people personally. There will be opportunities to reflect on HIV as well as focusing on the positive gains that the wider community has fought for and achieved.

Levi's Star Ladies Night
1 December 2016, 6.00pm - 9.00pm | Cedar Court Hotel, Wakefield, WF4 3QZ
The evening will include sandwiches, cakes, tea, coffee and a goody bag.

Governance Masterclass - Financial Responsibilities

Nova is running a Governance Masterclass programme aimed at trustees, directors and management committee members of local charities and community organisations. This session will be delivered by WYCAS and will look at financial issues that all trustees and directors should be aware of.

Health and Social Care Forum
18 January 2017, 2.00pm - 4.00pm | The Cluntergate Centre, Cluntergate, Horbury, WF4 5DA 
There will be big changes to the way in which the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) works in the future and Melanie Brown - Director of Community and Integrated Care at Wakefield CCG will be coming along to the forum to explain the changes and how they will impact on the VCS. Funding Opportunities
There are lots of funding opportunities on the Nova website at the moment. Please see below for a selection of the funding opportunities currently available:

Community Business Bright Ideas Fund
Application deadline: 30 November 2016
The Community Business Bright Ideas Fund is a new grant programme to help communities develop their budding community business ideas. The £1.85 million Community Business Bright Ideas Fund will offer community groups tailored support and grants of up to £20,000 to develop their ideas for a community business.

PetPlan Welfare Grants
Application deadline: 2 December 2016
Grant applications must demonstrate a direct benefit to the species supported by PetPlan (dogs, cats, horses and rabbits). All applications which meet the criteria set out by the Trust are forwarded to the Welfare Committee for consideration. The Welfare Committee then makes recommendations to the Board of Trustees and applicants will be informed of the Trustees' decision after the next Trustees' meeting (usually in February or March each year).

Coalfields Community Investment Programme - Skills Theme
Application deadline: 12 December 2016
The Coalfields Community Investment Programme offer is now live for the Skills Theme only. The Coalfields Community Investment Programme (England) is a £500,000 fund created to support activities that tackle some of the key challenges that still remain in coalfield communities. The fund is open to projects that deliver in the top 30% most deprived coalfield communities and that will make a positive difference in addressing the following theme: Skills - Growing the skills of people in order to increase their communities.

Co-op Local Community Fund
Application deadline: 16 December 2016
Co-op members get 1% of everything they spend on Co-op products to give to a local cause that matters to them. You can now apply to be one of these causes for the next round of funding, running from March to September 2017.

Young Lives is running a training session for those who would like to refresh their awareness of safeguarding children and young people.

Community Business Leaders Programme
January 2017 - June 2017 
The programme is designed for people who are part of a community organisation, are passionate about supporting their local community and would benefit from leadership and skills training, peer learning and fast-track connections to other organisations.

The Centre for Voluntary Sector Leadership
The Centre for Voluntary Sector Leadership (CVSL) is part of The Open University Business School. The Centre aims to provide voluntary sector organisations with access to free leadership development modules and research-led insight.
