Students prepare for MP#s debating competition

Students from King Harold Academy will be among the eight school teams taking part in the Epping Forest Schools Parliamentary Debating Competition organised by Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing.

The teams, each comprising two students, will debate the Motion: “This House believes that Britain’s influence in the world will be greater once it leaves the European Union”.

The King Harold Academy team and the teams from Chigwell School, Braeside School and Davenant Foundation School will speak against the Motion.

Debden Park High School, West Hatch High School, Epping St John's School and Roding Valley High School will be speaking for the Motion.

Representing King Harold Academy will be Year 11 students Regan Hughes-Franklin and Lisa Nakimuli.

English teacher Elizabeth Butler said: "We are really excited about taking part in the debate after our first appearance last year.

"Last year we argued that Britain should not leave the EU and are sticking to a similar line this year.

"We are arguing that Britain's influence will be less after we leave. This is a topic that has engaged our students greatly and they feel very passionate about. It is great to see them actively engage in politics."

She added: "To prepare we will be staging a staff versus student debate after school. We did the same last year and it proved to be a very engaging and closely fought debate."

The competition takes place at Roding Valley High School, Loughton, on Friday, November 18.

Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing said: "I am very much looking forward to the evening which always sees a high standard of debate from the participating students.

"It is certainly the hot topic in UK politics at the moment and it will be interesting to see the arguments which are put forward by the teams this year."
