In her concession speech Hillary Clinton, in reference to Donald Trump winning the election, said "we owe him an open mind." The idea that I owe Donald Trump anything is not something I can wrap my head or heart around at this point, but I was intrigued by the idea of an open mind. It reminded me of the Buddhist concept of Beginner's Mind. The Zen Buddhist Shunryu Suzuki says, "In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few."
What if we didn't presume to know what half our fellow citizens think, feel, and experience based upon whom they voted for? What if we instead engaged with an open mind in dialogue with them? Might there be possibilities available that we haven't even conceived of yet?
