Welcome to our newsletter for November.

A busy month this last month, with loads going on: NewCycling joined forces with North Tyneside Cycling Campaign to ask local authorities for more investment in local sustainable transport's infrastructure; you can have your say in the Nexus consultation about the new metro fleet; read our opinions on road safety in the lead up to Road Safety Week; YouReporters Koko and Katja write on the differences in cycling in Newcastle compared to Rotterdam and Bremen; and the campaign urges Newcastle City Council to make more of an effort with sustainable transport policies for Science Central.

Finally, the Grow Your Tenner match-funding scheme is still open for a little while longer, so if you'd like to donate and haven't done so already, please click here for our Localgiving page. And many thanks for all the donations so far... you are wonderful!

Keep on pedalling!

Joint Letter To Newcastle & North Tyneside Councils

NewCycling teamed up with the North Tyneside Cycling Campaign to send a joint letter to the regional chiefs requesting the start of negotiations for the infrastructure investment required to support walking and cycling as part of an integrated sustainable transport solution. Click here to read the letter.

Action For Members: NEXUS Consultation On New Metro Fleet – Read Our Reply

Newcycling has replied to the Nexus consultation on the new Metrocar fleet design, and individuals are also invited to send in responses online up until December 2, 2016 – your chance to ask for a 21st Century design which meets future needs and allows normal bikes on metro. To read the NewCycling's response, and for a link to send in your own opinions, click here.

Road Safety Week – Let’s Stop The Blame Game

Newcastle City Council says it wants more people to cycle and travel more actively. And rightly so! Newcastle has an obesity crisis, general inequalities are widening, and the construction of an inclusive transport system could level the playing field. Yet, many road and traffic schemes do not comply. Click here to read NewCycling's views, including our Charter for Sensible Road Safety.

YouReport: Home & Abroad

Following the YouReport article earlier this year by Koko Herder, a visiting Dutch student, Koko has now written a report (click here) on cycling infrastructure and its design process in Newcastle, and compared his findings to Rotterdam, including the many tensions existing in the design process in Newcastle and the resultant incomplete cycle infrastructure.
Also, our very own Chair, Katja Leyendecker, contrasts cycling in Newcastle with Bremen in Germany for the blog Breminize – blogging for a liveable city (click here for a link to the article).

Science Central Masterplan Consultation – Our Reply

Did you know that Science Central, one of the key flagship developments within Newcastle city centre, is aiming to be an exemplary site for sustainable urban development? In our reply to their Development Framework consultation (click here), we remind the council of their sustainable transport policies and recommend that they revisit their proposal for another car park, and instead create cycling infrastructure linking up with the city's strategic cycle network.
