What do you bring
To the Table?
As I was enjoying a captivating game of hockey the other night on my television, I noticed that the Thanksgiving commercials and advertisements were all beginning to air. As I watched the commercials, I realized that most of them had that elaborate Thanksgiving setting. There was the charming family, of all ages, sitting around the perfectly prepared table, waiting with wide open eyes and mouth watering anticipation as the beautiful, scrumptious, baked to perfection turkey was being paraded to their table.

My first thought went right to the turkey, I starting thinking about how to cook the turkey, which store might have the best sale, when I should get my turkey, and then I decided that I probably had better get one fairly soon just in case they run out! Then my mind drifted to what I think is the best part of the Thanksgiving meal – the side dishes and desserts. Don’t get me wrong, I love the turkey and look forward to it but those side dishes are what I anticipate the most. My mind gleefully drifted off. Soon I was thinking about the delicious mashed potatoes and gravy, yummy sweet potatoes, perfectly peppered corn, grandma’s green bean casserole, tart cranberry sauce, crispy stuffing, flavorful fruit salads, and savory vegetable salads. Then of course there are the delectable desserts – every type of fruit pie that you can think of, fluffy cakes, golden apple crisps, and pumpkin ice cream. Oh my! The list could go on and on! My flooded, food-filled mind was on overload!

As I continued to think about food, recipes, and ingredients, my thoughts quickly focused on who was going to be at my table this year. I thought about my family and friends and how excited everyone is for this gathering at this spectacular feast. I began to interrogate myself with some questions. How can I make this Thanksgiving more memorable? What can I do to make this Thanksgiving extra special for my family and friends? Should I attempt a never-before-tried recipe? Should I decorate differently this year? Is it really all about the food and decorations? What am I going to bring to the table this year?

I soon realized that my life can be like just that Thanksgiving table. My table is set and my family and friends are gathered around. Every member brings unique gifts and admirable talents to my table. That is what makes my table extra special. What gifts can I bring to my table this year? Maybe it is adding that special bowl of macaroni and cheese for that super picky eater in my family, a welcoming heartwarming gesture to the new addition to our family, or an open-hearted invitation to a loved one who may have gone astray. Thanksgiving tables happen in both wonderful and imperfect times. I may need to bring sympathetic compassion for those at my table that might be hurting. Maybe they have suffered a loss of a family member or friend. The seat, where their loved one was accustomed to sit, is now painfully empty for them. Compassion, understanding, forgiveness, and love are what bond my table closer together. My table is not always perfect but we are family and that is what matters!

SCORE!!! My mind is jolted back into the game I was previous watching! I now know just what makes my table stand out and I know exactly what I am going to bring to my table this year! What are you going to bring to your table?
