Colorado's ESSA Hub Committee discusses standards, title programs

DENVER –  Colorado's Hub Committee that is overseeing the development of the state's plans for the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) made a key decision during Monday's monthly meeting, voting to move a draft of the standards section of the state's plan to the State Board of Education for consideration.

The move is significant as the Hub Committee is working under a tight deadline to provide draft sections to the State Board of Education, which will make the final approval of the state plan before submission to the U.S. Department of Education next year.

Additionally on Monday, the Hub Committee heard from representatives from the Title Programs & Assurances Spoke Committee and discussed decision points around Title I funding.

The Hub Committee is made up of about 20 members from the community, legislature and Colorado State Board of Education. It is part of a hub-and-spoke process. Seven topical spoke committees are meeting concurrently to give the Hub Committee guidance on important parts of the state plan.

Interim education Commissioner Katy Anthes congratulated the Hub members for passing along the first draft decision point. However, she said much work remains.

"We have a lot more ahead of us," she said.

All states, including Colorado, must develop a plan on how to implement ESSA by next year. The Colorado State Board of Education is expected to receive a draft of the state’s ESSA plan by early 2017 with delivery to the U.S. Department of Education in the spring.

Next Hub meeting: 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 12, State Board Room, 201 E. Colfax Ave. Denver
