More

Our third album is in the works! Pre-orders have launched, and for the first time, you can hear Jonathan Russel's "Light Cathedral" in its entirety! This was performed live at Light Street Presbyterian Church on April 9 and 10, 2016 and commissioned by Symphony Number One for Baltimore's inaugural Light City festival. Light Cathedral will be featured on our new album, More. Fun Fact: the ending of Light Cathedral was used in a dance production this summer. Read the story, listen, and watch here

Live at The Sun

Our live-streamed performance at The Baltimore Sun was a success! The concert featured a few of the premieres from the Light City Festival which took place earlier this year, followed by a tease of Gustav Mahler's Das Lied von Der Erde sung by soloists Joshua Diaz and Taylor Hillary Boykins. Missed the live performance? You can watch the replay here

Song of the Earth Recap

We had a banner weekend performing the music of Mahler and Draper. Natalie Draper's Timelapse variations captivated the audience with its dramatic intensity and meditative moments, which provided the perfect atmosphere for the music of Mahler. Taylor Hillary Boykins and Joshua Diaz brought Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde to life with incredible sensitivity to text and music. Look for Natalie's piece on our next album! Pre-order Now.

About Symphony Number One

Symphony Number One is Baltimore's newest chamber orchestra, performing substantial works by emerging composers, beloved classics, and a twist of pop. Symphony Number One brings together great composers of the past, virtuoso performers of the present, and the leading compositional voices of the future, creating electrifying concert experiences for all of Baltimore.

Praised for presenting "full-length freshness on each program" by the Baltimore Sun, the orchestra was founded in 2015 by Music Director Jordan Randall Smith after recruiting a creative team of colleagues from the Peabody ConservatoryNicholas BentzSean MeyersMelissa Lander, and Christopher Ciampoli. In one year's time, Symphony Number One has premiered new works of over a dozen composers, released two "must get" albums (available for purchase or download on Spotify & iTunes), and performed at Baltimore's inaugural Light City Festival. The orchestra was also highlighted in Baltimore STYLE as "brazen...like an indie rock band", featured on the acclaimed television show MPT Artworks, granted the "Category Buster" award by Baltimore Magazine and chosen as "Runner Up" for Baltimore's Best Band in this year's 2016 Best of Baltimore Reader's Poll

Symphony Number One is a proud member of the Fall 2016 class of Baltimore Social Innovation Fellows.

Symphony Number One develops close working relationships with young and emerging composers, gives new works multiple hearings, produces substantial recordings, and creates unique concert experiences for the public by juxtaposing new music with the classical canon.
