Sutton Trust, the leading social mobility charity, urges schools to implement targeted attainment improvement programmes for disadvantaged white British pupils.

Their latest report - titled Class Differences: ethnicity and disadvantage - found that white British boys eligible for Free School Meals have now been either the lowest or second lowest performing ethnic group every year for a decade.

STA deemed “broadly” fit for purpose, despite “lack of strategy and oversight”

A new review into the Standards and Testing Agency (STA) found a lack of “end-to-end strategy”, data and oversight, as well as a “defensive and silo culture”. This follows two security breaches – one in 2015 when a KS1 test was cancelled after spelling guidance was published online containing text words, and another in 2016 when the KS2 SPAG test was mistakenly uploaded online.

Grammar schools will have to demonstrate how they’ll improve the “social mix”

“Strict conditions” will be implemented to increase the number of pupils from poor backgrounds in selective schools and they will apply to new and existing grammar schools. Nick Gibb, the Schools Minister, told MPs in the Education Select Committee that selection will be possible only if schools improve access to disadvantaged pupils.

Northern primary schools are least likely to be coasting

Only 22 primary schools in the North (2.1% out of a total of 1,054) were found to be coasting after the release of provisional 2016 school performance results, according to the DfE. This is below the national average of 3.5% and the lowest percentage  across the whole of England, followed by 2.7% in Lancashire & West Yorkshire, where 65 primary schools out of a total of 2,411 were listed.

Green Paper Consultation Workshop
The Government’s “Schools that Work for Everyone” Green Paper contains a series of proposals that would significantly reshape the education landscape in the North East. The plan to lift the ban on grammar schools has attracted most attention, but other proposed changes will also have major implications. SCHOOLS NorthEast is holding a consultation workshop to help shape our response.

Autumn Term Ofsted Briefings 
SCHOOLS NorthEast has set up a series of termly events with Ofsted to support schools in the region to stay current on all information regarding inspections. Our autumn term briefings will include a themed discussion around raising standards in KS3 English, focussing on transition. There will also be contributions from North East Head Teachers who have recently been inspected.

Film Skills Workshop: DIRECTING
Suitable for ages 15-19, this series of practical one-day workshops are an excellent way to explore the key building blocks of bringing a film to the screen. The Directing Workshop includes role and responsibilities, finding the story beats in the script, storyboarding, working with actors, shooting a scene.

Schools Northeast   The Education Endowment Foundation tested the impact of Magic Breakfast clubs on pupil attainment in relatively disadvantaged primary schools. There has been considerable interest in school meals over recent years, including the introduction of universal infant free school meals and breakfast club pilots in England, and new policy on breakfast provision in Wales.
