"Building A Better School Community...TOGETHER!"
Weekly Update 11/7 - 11/11

Dear GHS parents,

Thursday morning right before school we were informed that a group of students were planning an election protest that would go from snack to lunch.  The students were informed that if they missed class they would be truant but that they would be allowed to conduct their protest since their plan was to just sit outside and be silent.

Near the end of lunch a small number of other students acted inappropriately towards the protesters including throwing lunch objects. School administrators, including District administrators who were on campus, were there and immediately stepped in. Students were identified and immediately suspended. Other students have been identified via our School cameras and will be disciplined when school resumes on Monday.

It is unfortunate that we had students who chose to express themselves in this manner, especially when the event started as a peaceful example of how our democracy works when it is at its best. It is also unfortunate that so much misinformation about this event is being spread. I want to commend the adults who worked hard to handle a difficult situation and the vast majority of our students who acted peacefully and maturely.

Regardless of where you stand on the outcome of the election, it is time to come together as a nation and a community and celebrate the peaceful transition of power that we are so famous for throughout the world.

A NEW DONOR'S CHOOSE PROJECT
FROM MS. KHACHTURIAN

Help Ms. K fund this Cultural Hand Design Project.  Her students will learn about henna, a multi-branched flowering plant that also produces a dye for skin, hair, fingernails, and fabric, the origin of it, and its uses. Additionally, they will learn about other cultures and how henna designs defer in various cultures such as Indian, Arabic, Pakistani, Persian, and North African cultures. They will then apply what they have learned to create a cast of their own hand (working in partners and switching roles) and creating a henna design influenced by the culture of their choice to apply on their sculpture (using tempera paint) to express what they have learned about the design in 3D.

This project will raise funds for plaster strips, foam boards, paint, xacto, and brushes to create a three-dimensional Henna Design Sculpture.
