The winner of the 2016 Copa Cogeca’s European innovation prize for women farmers was Margaret Farrelly. Out of a necessity to supplement the family income, she started her business in 1987 with 150 hens. Since then, she has built the enterprise to encompass a free-range flock of over 160,000 hens. Matching the logistics of a farmers' cooperative with consumers' needs can be a real challenge. The Jarina farmers’ cooperative has found and tested several solutions over the past 12 years. They now deliver to around 80 nurseries, schools and retirement homes in the city of Ljubljana. Find out more.

This EIP-AGRI workshop which took place in September in Krakov, Poland, aimed at building innovative food systems, looking both from the perspective of the farmer as well as the city. They looked at approaches which give cities easy access to fresh, safe and healthy food, benefiting local producers and contributing to local economic development. Read the final report.

National Rural Networks' support units are currently exploring new activities to support the implementation of the EIP-AGRI. A workshop in Budapest, Hungary, on 4 and 5 October brought representatives together to exchange practical experiences about successful approaches and specific networking and communication tools. Farmers, landowners, land managers, research institutes, universities and/or private companies… have you developed techniques mitigating soil threats such as soil degradation, erosion, and reduction of organic matter content? Apply to the ELO Land and Soil award before 31 December. The winning project receives 5000€ prize money and is promoted as a good practice at EU level.

The EUFRUIT thematic network launched in March 2016 aims to gather and analyse existing knowledge and best-practices within the four thematic areas: performance of new fruit varieties, reduction in pesticide residues, fruit quality and improvement of fruit handling/storage, and secure sustainable fruit production. EUFRUIT’s consortium consists of research institutes, universities, and industrial partners from 12 European countries, they will work with farmers on a regional level.

RITA is an agricultural development network in the French outermost Regions (Guadeloupe, Guyane, Martinique, Mayotte and Reunion Island). In each region, the local RITA brings people from research, agricultural development, professional organisations, and authorities together. They identify research, development and innovation projects which respond to needs of farmers and the region as a whole. Read more.

Working closely with farmers in the Shropshire region, UK, researchers at Harper Adams University are looking at novel ways to limit potato cyst nematodes – highly damaging parasites of potato. Dr Matthew Back is leading this research into the use of biofumigation. Read more.
