December 2016
Tips & inspiration for incorporating drawing into science, education & daily life.
Happy December, dear readers!
Over the next week, I'll be scribbling down a few final notes for 2016. I hope you have time to do the same! And then, I'll start working on a January 2017 newsletter packed with year-starting ideas.

In the meantime, as is tradition for the CommNatural newsletter, I invite you to enjoy some highlights from throughout the 2016 newsletters.

As always, please feel free to share* this newsletter with friends and colleagues...and your sketching adventures (and sketches) with me via email or social media.

Happy sketching and happy holidays!

Sketching tips
Artful Science
Insight

"The most beautiful thing
we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source
of all true art and science."

                   -- Albert Einstein
*From the April 2016 edition of
the CommNatural newsletter
Sketching Tip: Shading with color
Shading with color can make your sketches lively!
These shadows were created by using contrasting and complementary colors, not gray or black.

Tips for shading with color:
  • Use color in, and to make, shadows.
  • Remember to leave highlights white.
  • Shadows themselves are not shapes, but an absence of light.
See the August 2016 newsletter for complete details about these tips.
Artful Science: My SciArt Talk!
In March, I gave a talk on the historical and contemporary synergies between art and science.

If you're looking for something to watch or listen to, rather than something to read or do, this talk might be just the thing. You'll see, it roved through history and looked at technologies that have influenced art and science. And, it took a look at research and examples of how art and science can do much more than make data look pretty.

Click here to view the talk! It's about an hour long, including the Q&A following my presentation.

I first mentioned this talk in the Feb/March 2016 edition of the CommNatural newsletter.
Artful Classrooms: Necessary Leisure
The etymology of 'leisure'  includes words which originally meant something akin to 'free time for learning.'

In the October 2016 edition of the newsletter, I mentioned a book review I read on the splendid Brain Pickings website, a site I've recommended before.

The book review essay, "Leisure, the Basis of Culture," discusses a book of the same name. The book was written in 1948 by German philosopher Josef Pieper.

Certainly, the book and the review (by Brain Pickings author Maria Popova), helped me realize why so-called leisure activities generate new ideas for me. They also pushed me to ponder how this principle could be applied in the classes you and I teach.

I'm working on a syllabus for next semester, and the question I posed in October, prompted by this consideration of leisure is still of interest.

What do you think? How might providing down time, free time to let the mind and body wander, enhance student learning, and how can we facilitate that for them?
Incorporate sketching
into your k12, university, or
adult education program!

I am available for half- and full-day sessions or artist-in-residence
programs. I can teach or coach you in both drawing and drawing
facilitation, and I'm willing to help write grants to secure funding.

Please contact me directly if you'd
like to schedule an educational program.
Sketchbook Snapshot
Back on the Tortoise & Hare trail!

I'm on another research and observation trip to the Arizona portion of the Sonoran Desert. Here are a few snapshots from the field:

Landscape is a big part of The Ecologically True Story of the Tortoise and the Hare, and so, I've been practicing up on my landscape sketching and trying to capture both the aesthetic and ecological elements of these places.

I'm pretty sure this is hare scat, but I didn't see one anywhere nearby. Still, where there's scat, there is (or at least was) wildlife!

Creosote (left) and unidentified wildflower (right)
I'm not sure if tortoises and hares eat either of
these plants, but the animals' diets are on my
list of questions. As a reminder, these sprigs
are taped into my sketchbook.

I'll kick off 2017 by curating the @IAmSciArt Twitter account! Primary topics will be a) strategies for integrating drawing in science classrooms and b) basic instruction to avoid the "told but not taught" issue which is unfortunately common when drawing integration is attempted.
