New approach to enforcement

The small minority of people who litter will face tougher enforcement action as part of a new trial that has been agreed.

During a 9-month trial a new team of uniformed officers will patrol the streets handing out fines ranging from £80 to £400 to anyone aged 18 or over who is seen dropping or dumping rubbish or allowing their dogs to foul our streets.

Find out more about the trial and please do let us know what you think. You can do so by dropping us a line at yourshout@haringey.gov.uk

Holcombe Road Market back in business

A popular Tottenham market, which has been trading in the area for nearly 100 years, has re-opened this week after a major refurbishment.

Holcombe Road Market, opposite Bruce Grove Station, has re-opened with a new and improved layout, new kiosks including three additional market stalls, and new paving, as part of the regeneration plans for Tottenham. The work also includes bespoke signage and a new CCTV camera to help make the area safer. Stalls include Hall’s Greengrocers, Thompson’s Seafood; a new local business Prestige Patisserie and Brown Eagle, selling Caribbean food and drink which has been in business in Tottenham and Wood Green for a number of years.

Wear your poppy with pride

Mayor of Haringey Cllr Ali Gul Ozbek is backing the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and has appealed to the borough’s residents to join him in wearing their poppy with pride this November.

Poppies and donation boxes can be found in each of Haringey’s libraries, and on the reception desks of Haringey Civic Centre and River Park House, High Road, Wood Green. Money raised goes towards the support of serving and ex-service people and their families.

Residents are also invited to Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday events taking place in the borough.

What matters to you?

Since 2010 the government has cut Haringey’s budget by 40% in real terms.  As we plan how to deal with that, it’s crucial that we know what your spending priorities are, so we’ve taken to the streets to speak to residents.  We've already held a drop-in event in Crouch End, and we've got more taking place across the borough throughout November. We’d love to hear your views so take a look at where we’ll be and join us.

If you can't come along, you can still take part - just complete our online survey.

Funding Early Years Education and Childcare in Haringey Consultation

The government is proposing to change the way early years education for all 3 and 4 year old children is funded from April 2017. This means changes to the way providers of early years education will get paid for each child, and how each local authority is able to support the cost of ensuring that enough high quality early education and childcare is available in their area.

It also means that money, some of which has been used by Haringey Council to support the delivery of childcare in the borough may be greatly reduced.

We want to gather views from parents, staff, Governors and all stakeholders’ on our proposals for developing a sustainable childcare offer in Haringey. Find out more and complete the online questionnaire.

Careers fair to help young people take the right path

Around 1,000 young people will be attending a ‘Routes to Work’ careers fair at Alexandra Palace to find out about their future options.

Whether considering staying on to do ‘A’-levels, vocational qualifications or apprenticeships there is something for everybody at the event which takes place on 16 November from 4 - 7.30pm at Alexandra Palace. There are a few remaining tickets left for Year 11 students if you haven’t registered yet – but be quick.

Cllr Joe Goldberg, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Sustainability and Social Inclusion, said:

‘It’s a tough and competitive world out there. If you are leaving school or college, we want to make sure you feel fighting fit to take on your challenges, pursue your ambitions with confidence and compete and succeed with anyone in London, or from anywhere in the world. This event is there to provide the advice and information you need to find out your options and what is right for you.’ Tell us why you want to come and what you think of careers advice in Haringey by completing a one-minute survey.

Haringey celebrates Recovery Pride 2016

Over 300 Haringey residents have come together for Recovery Pride 2016, an annual event to celebrate people accessing support for drug and alcohol use.

This year’s theme, ‘Recovery is a Journey Not a Destination’, was marked with inspirational stories of recovery, music and spoken word performances by service users, and awards for individuals’ achievements and contributions.

Service users, friends and family celebrated at the Grove Drug Service in Tottenham, with stalls and activities from BUBIC, HAGA, Haringey Time Credits, SHINE Haringey, Insight Platform, Crutch, Haringey Boxing Club and many more.  Recovery Pride 2016 also saw volunteers and staff organise a two mile walk across the borough, and a special Time Credits trip on the Thames Clipper.
