Book of the Week:
Focus: Elevating the Essentials to Radically Improve Student Learning

Bestselling author Mike Schmoker describes a plan for radically improving student learning that is built on three core elements: a focused and coherent curriculum (what we teach); clear, prioritized lessons (how we teach); and purposeful reading and writing, or authentic literacy.

With this "less is more" philosophy, educators can help students learn content at a deeper level, develop greater critical thinking skills, and discover more clearly how content-area concepts affect their lives and the world around them.

Both a call to action and a blueprint for creating more effective classrooms, Focus: Elevating the Essentials for Radically Improved Student Learning will challenge your assumptions about schooling and show how educators who have embraced this approach quickly achieved spectacular results.

Computer Based Testing (CBT) Technology Readiness
  • For districts considering participating in CBT for the NYS 3-8 ELA/Math Assessments, NYSED has released the 2017 Technology Readiness Checklist.
  • While you do not need to fill this out now (it will be completed on-line when the NYSED Portal is opened), we wanted you to be aware that each building that signs up for CBT will need to complete the Technology Readiness Form before they can participate in CBT.
  • We recommend the building principal work with their district technology staff, or if you purchase these services through NERIC, please feel free to contact your appropriate NERIC contact.
  • We do not yet have a date for when the NYSED Portal will open for ordering Grade 3-8 assessments, but anticipate it will be in the next few weeks. This is a change from late October deadline we were provided.
    • As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact the NERIC Testing Team at testing@neric.org.
