How do I know if I need a PSA test?
Prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, is a blood test used to help detect prostate cancer. An elevated level of the antigen in your blood might indicate you have cancer. Seems pretty straight forward, right?
“There is growing controversy regarding the PSA test and whether or not it is necessary for younger, otherwise healthy men,” said Gregory Janda, MD, urologist and cancer surgeon at Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa. “Deciding whether or not to do PSA testing is a choice you should make with your doctor. The pros and cons to having the test will have different meaning to different people.”
