Goodman Youth Farm has a seed library. E-I-E-I-O.
Okay, maybe it is not a great lyrical fit. But it is a great idea nonetheless. Goodman Youth Farm is a project of Community GroundWorks. In a recent visit to the Program Manager’s office, I found a desk full of seeds.
Me: “Jennica, what is going on over there?”
Jennica: “Those are bean seeds that will go into our seed library. Neighbors and other community members are encouraged to come visit the seed library to select some seeds, plant them, and watch them grow. At the end of the season, we hope they will put some seeds aside and return them to the seed library for others to enjoy. Take a seed. Leave a seed.”
Take a seed. Leave a seed. Those six words really encapsulate all we do as garden educators and as educators in general. We take a seed of passion, of knowledge, or of hope. Then we leave it with those little hands, minds, and hearts, and wait for it to grow.
Happy gardening,
Beth
