Training for a Race is EXACTLY Like Training Your Dog
One of the things I love about running is that I’m competing against myself. I might come in 974th place overall (that would actually be incredible considering there are 25,000+ runners in this race), but I can still beat my PR (personal record). When I'm practicing, I might be able to even run my best 5K pace ever. So the opportunity for reinforcement is always there whether I’m practicing or I’m running a race.
Same thing with your dog: you’re not entering a dog show and competing against other dogs — you’re just trying to improve your dog’s behavior from where it is now.

Expand Your Dog Training Career with Me!
I'm headed across the US next year to teach a Dog Trainer Professional course. Join me for some great learning and a lot of fun.
The Karen Pryor Academy 6-month Dog Trainer Professional program is for the highly motivated dog trainer who is looking to advance his/her skills and career prospects to their highest levels. The program combines online learning with hands-on instruction and is divided into four online Units and four two-day hands-on workshops; complete an online Unit and then attend a two-day workshop at the end of each Unit.
Experienced trainers, including experienced clicker trainers, will find the Dog Trainer Professional program very challenging very quickly. We cover the basics of clicker training at first, but move on to advanced topics like behavior chains, shaping, cueing, TAGteach, and business planning shortly thereafter.
I'm excited to offer two different formats: the Regional format [four in-person working weekends] and the National [one five-day working week]. Locations and deadlines are listed below:
- Athens (Atlanta area), GA -- Application deadline is December 19 [Regional format]
- Arlington (Washington, DC area), VA -- Application is March 20 [Regional format]
- St. Louis, MO -- Application deadline is April 10 [National format]
Apply now and join me in 2017!
