MEMBER NEWS
Congratulations to Amie O'Shea and partner Melanie on the arrival of Joey Pritchard O'Shea, a brother for James.

Congratulations to Tasmanian member Ali Dowl on the birth of Louis Basil in September. ASLIA Victoria wishes you all the best.
Congratulations to ASLIA (WA) Life Member Karen Bontempo! Karen is the recipient of the WA Premier's Secondary Teacher of the Year Award for her incredible work at Shenton College with the Auslan as a LOTE program. We are extremely proud of Karen and her contribution to the Deaf and Interpreting Communities of WA! Well done!
As 2016 comes to a close, we would like to acknowledge the contribution that Rae Hynes has made to the field of education, as she has announced her retirement. Rae's career saw her instrumental in the establishing of Deaf Facilities at both Monash Secondary College and Forest Hill College. Not only has she supported many students over her career, she has also been a valued mentor to many interpreters and a much loved colleague and friend. On learning of Rae's departure, many past students returned to wish her well- a true testament to the impact she has had on many lives.
ASLIA Victoria would like to congratulate Rae on her 25 years of dedicated service, and to pass on our best wishes for her retirement.

The Goo at the Center of a Sign Language Interpreter

If a sign language interpreter could reach inside and scoop out the goo that makes them who they are, a mixture of artistic judgment, emotional labor, and organic creativity would drip from their fingers.  This genuine house blend is the very essence of who they are and why they’ve chosen to do what they do.
To those who work with, play or love a sign language interpreter, it is important that you not underestimate the power of the goo because, at times, it can rival Yoda’s “force!”
So, what are you in for if you find yourself connected to a sign language interpreter?  Let’s examine the goo and find out!

Building Trust: Accepting the Mantle of Sign Language Interpreter
Trustworthiness is a trait all sign language interpreters must embody. Wing Butler posits that it is our duty to display our commitment and trustworthiness at all times, on-the-job and off.
