North Dakota is vetting opportunities for conference membership with the Missouri Valley & Summitt according to the Grand Forks Herald, which obtained text message records sent from AD Faison to leaders of the two leagues. Correspondence indicates Faison is looking toward a most likely scenario of fully exiting the Big Sky by 2018-19 "unless things change dramatically." FB scheduling is one key dynamic & it looks like the Big Sky has promised to keep UND's slates the same through the 2019 campaign. (link)
Another former student-athletes gives back with the 'Honey Badger' donating $1M to LSU that will go toward upgrades for the FB Operations Center. Former stand-out Mathieu joins fellow Arizona Cardinals defensive wiz & former Tiger Peterson with a seven-figure gift. The pair served as honorary captains during last night's showdown with Alabama & Mathieu's commitment was announced during a break in the first quarter. (link)
Daily dose of Baylor begins with comments from HC Grobe on the climate in Waco after a 62-22 loss to TCU yesterday, "A lot of distractions don't help. This is a game you really got to spend all your focus on for 12 games during the season to play well, and if you don't, this is what happens." Grobe also says he was not aware in advance of the statement released by the program's ACs on Friday night that supported how former HC Briles handled a sexual assault situation, but wouldn't have stood in their way had he been in the loop. Outside McLane Stadium, #CAB (Coach Art Briles) were being sold & one suite had a banner with the same message waving from its window. (link); Tulsa World reporter Emig via Twitter: "No official statement from Big 12 on what's happening in Waco today/Fri statement from Baylor staff. I can tell you conf is very discouraged." (link)
The AAC's new branding campaign may include FB programs wearing 'P6' (Power 6) decals on their helmets as UCF & Tulane did just that yesterday. After Navy defeated Notre Dame to begin the day, Knights AD White tweeted, "Congratulations to @NavyAthletics! Great win for the @American_Conf - what a bigtime #Power6 showdown!" UCF also wore decals honoring the victims in the Pulse Nightclub tragedy over the summer. (link)
Cincinnati FB HC Tuberville had some feedback for a Bearcats fan while exiting the field at Nippert Stadium yesterday after a 20-3 loss to BYU. Can't quite make out what the fan says, something about stealing from the university, but Tuberville fired back, "Hey, go to hell. Get a job. Get a job." The UC boss is 29-18 in three-plus seasons, including 4-5 (1-4) in the current campaign. (link)
Yahoo NBA insider Wojnarowski reports USA Basketball will hand over its reigns to former Joint Chiefs of Staff retired General Dempsey once current boss Colangelo steps away after the 2020 Olympics. Dempsey has been highly involved in the sport as he served as an advisor to Commish Silver & as Chair of the Junior NBA Leadership Council. "As chairman of USA Basketball, Dempsey’s focus will be on the business and relationships of the broad-based national team programs, including cultivating relationships within the NBA and NCAA. […] One of the central focuses of the new chairman’s job will be the development of youth basketball players across the country." (link)

The Big Ten's FB recruiting push into Florida is clear from the numbers: "In 2006, the league's 11 teams had 52 players from Florida. Those same programs have 88 this year. Newcomers Nebraska, Rutgers and Maryland add 31." Only the states of Michigan & Ohio have produced more 1st Team All-B1G performers on the gridiron last year than the Sunshine State. Wisconsin HC Chryst: "Wisconsin — there aren't that many kids here. You're going to go supplement. Florida's been one of those areas." A bit more. (link)

Brand new Mississippi State AD Cohen makes his expected first move, hires LSU AC Cannizaro as the new boss on the diamond for the Bulldogs. "We are thrilled to welcome Andy to the Mississippi State baseball family. When you look at all of the characteristics we need in a baseball coach at Mississippi State, Andy is the perfect fit. [...] He has an outstanding resume as a recruiter and scout in evaluating and developing talent. He's been around some of the best minds in all of baseball during his college and professional career. His personality and knowledge of the game will benefit our players." (link)
Another Baseball note, FIU AD Garcia says he'll be focused on the growth of the Panthers program during the last two years of his time leading the athletic department. Key facility upgrades are coming for Baseball, including a "luxurious" locker room & lounge, one Garcia thinks will be tops in all of Conference USA, if not the entire nation. HC Melendez: "It will be great for the guys getting extra work done. Everything else is for the fans. We’re going to have comfort seating and a new box [press box] behind home plate. So those are the things the fans are going to enjoy." (link)
"The two questions in the aftermath of that Aggie gag are these: Which playoff contenders benefit most (Washington, Ohio State, Louisville)?" That's from Yahoo's Forde in his 10-count recap of yesterday's gridiron action with some thoughts on which College FB Playoff contenders could see their stock rise with Texas A&M's loss at Mississippi State. Forde also lauds Alabama's defense, Ohio State's offense, wonders how last night impacts the HC candidacy of LSU Interim HC Orgeron, challenges remaining for Washington (starting with next weekend in Seattle versus USC) & more. (link)
Louisville FB HC Petrino after his side's 52-7 win over Boston College yesterday when asked if lopsided wins matter in the CFP context, "I guess we do, you know. I guess we do. It’s sad, because there’s something called sportsmanship. But maybe I made a mistake, looking back at it, Florida State we should’ve kept all the starters in and scored 80 points and done that. But I don’t understand why it’s like that. I really don’t. And then you look at Clemson and the schedule they’ve beat and the guys in the Top 10 that they’ve beat, and what Alabama’s done. Why isn’t Clemson rated No. 1?" (link)
Awful Announcing's Keeley says the Big Ten's decision to play some Friday night FB games is all about cash & little about the fans. Consider this comment from Ohio State AD Smith: "We battled for a long time to try to be respectful obviously for high school football. But the reality is what we need to do for our television partners and what we need to do for our revenue stream, we needed to consider some different options." Keeley: "To say nothing of the way college athletes are affected by an abundance of mid-week games. Gone are the days when someone could count on a weekly schedule to figure out when they’re going to train, when they’re going to study, and when they’re going to play. Now you’re at the mercy of ESPN or Fox or whoever else decided you’d make a better fit on Friday night than Saturday afternoon amongst the crowds." (link)
Lost amid talk around ESPN reportedly losing 621K subscribers last month is attrition for other sports networks. ESPNU lost 675K per Nielsen, ESPN2 down 607K, FS1 & FS2 -355K & -591K, respectively. NBA-TV actually led the dubious rankings with a 733K loss. All in all, ESPN is till in 88.956M homes, while FS1 counts 85.161M. Those totals account for 75% & 72% of all homes in the United States. When it comes to sports apps, you might assume that apps from pro leagues, pro teams and fantasy sports are better than apps from DI colleges. That's a false assumption, according to a 2016 research study of 550 NCAA fans. Fans like their favorite school's app better than apps from the pros, and 2 out of 3 are satisfied with their college team's app. The "Sports Apps vs. Other Apps" infographic and "Fan Engagement Study for NCAA Division I" eBook cover the survey findings. More clarity on the vacation of wins for Syracuse's MBB program comes from the Orange's new media guide & comments from HC Boeheim during a recent interview with Doug Gottlieb. Boeheim: "Most of them were about tutoring. Most but not all. One was a speech for $300 where the money was re-paid but not re-instated. That one was 45 games. … The (drug policy) has nothing to do with any of the games." Sixty of the 101 Ws vacated came from student-athlete payments from the YMCA, the other 41 were academically related. Lots more, including a breakdown per former student-athlete. (link)
Forbes contributor Barca profiles Rutgers AD Hobbs, totals $66.7M as Hobbs' fundraising tally to date with lots of talk around the coming RWJ Barnabas Health Athletic Performance Center. Driving private dollars is nothing new for Hobbs as he led a $25M campaign in 2007, right in the middle of the recession, when he was Dean of Seton Hall's Law School. Final result: $28M in the kitty. Heavy state government connections reviewed, also, "I told everybody on day one that we’re running a marathon, but we’re going to sprint the first five miles. What I told them in terms of time is that we have to run really hard for two years. We will keep working to get things done." (link)
Former Illinois FB student-athlete Durkin has filed a law suit against the university, former AD Thomas & former FB HC Beckman for allegedly forcing him to return to the field early from a shoulder injury, a move he claims eventually led to a loss of scholarship. "As a result, Durkin has and will continue to suffer physically and mentally, as well as past and future wages and medical expenses, the suit said. The five-count suit seeks damages in excess of $250,000." Statement from the university acknowledges the complaint, reiterates a top priority of student-athlete health & wellness. (link)
Ohio State has filed a suit against mega t-shirt maker CafePress for trademark infringement. Pushing for $1M for every type of product produced that used "Buckeyes," "O-H-I-O," or the image of FB HC Meyer, as well as all profits associated with the sale of such items. OSU Fisher College of Business marketing professor Mitchell, "It's becoming more and more of a focus as universities are searching for every revenue source they can find, and they have realized that one of their biggest sources is their brand. Ohio State's brand is arguably the most valuable, certainly one of the top brands among universities in value in terms of what people are willing to pay for it. So anything they have their brand on, they want it licensed." More. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz with FB HC bonus updates: Old Dominion HC Wilder $10K for becoming bowl eligible, Tennessee's Jones $100K & $50K for Arkansas boss Beilema for the same achievement, Boise State's 8th win on Friday night equaled an automatic one-year extension for HC Harsin, Colorado boss MacIntyre is up to $250K after beating UCLA, Ohio's Solich & Toledo's Candle get $5K & $7.5K respectively for victory number seven. More. (link)
Also noticed: Country music star Shelton will headline the lineup for the first concert in Penn State's Beaver Stadium next summer. (link); Marshawn Lynch was back driving a golf cart, literally & figuratively, on the field at Cal last night. Likely the best bobblehead of the year. (link); Two Alabama students were arrested for breaking into Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge last week & damaging the mid-field logo. (link); Good read on how the Chicago White Sox's Guaranteed Rate Field is being transformed into a FB venue for Wednesday night's match-up between Northern Illinois & Toledo. The FB field will run from foul ground on the third base line out through right field. More. (link)
