Going Green for Runaway Prevention / Video: Meet Our Youth and Get Inspired / 2016-17 Board / Foster Care Discussion on ThinkTech

On Nov. 9, 2016, our staff wore green to raise awareness of the issues facing runaway and homeless youth. (More photos)

An estimated 1.6 to 2.8 million youth run away each year in the U.S., and as many as 2.5 million youth experience homelessness. During National Runaway Prevention Month and National Homeless Youth Awareness Month in November, we join a national effort to raise awareness around the critical issues facing these youth, like the increased likelihood of substance abuse, early parenthood, depression and a vulnerability to being trafficked. 2016 Annual Meeting 9/28

Mahalo to everyone who attended our Annual Meeting on Sept. 28, 2016. We enjoyed recognizing our employees and resource caregivers, introducing this year’s board, and sharing special projects and achievements from youth in our programs. (More)

New Workshops Encourage Youth Self-Expression

We recently partnered with Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) to provide a series of workshops for boys ages 12-17 at one of our Oahu Emergency Shelters.

Led by Dr. Lori Phillips, director of the PREL Pacific Center for Arts and Humanities in Education (PCAHE), six youth used art, photography and writing to enhance self-expression skills and tell stories. (More)

Halloween was a 'Thriller'
Youth, teachers and the program coordinator in our School Success Program on Kauai celebrated Halloween on Oct. 31, 2016, with special activities (including dancing to the music video “Thriller”), treats, prizes and a scarecrow contest. (More)

YO! Participates in Pride
Our Youth Outreach Program (YO!) participated in the 2016 Honolulu Pride™ Festival on Oct. 22, 2016, with an informational booth in Waikiki. YO! staff distributed free goodies and enjoyed speaking with participants. Since 1989, Hale Kipa has provided services through YO! (More)

Hale Kipa Program Coordinator Michelle Kinimaka and Dez, a youth who has received foster care and Imua Kākou program services through Hale Kipa, were guests on “Aloha United We Stand” on Oct. 20, 2016. This ThinkTech Hawaii segment is dedicated to the people and organizations making a difference in Hawaii, made possible by Aloha United Way. It airs on OC16 every Thursday at noon.
