Math Night!

The PAC's 4th annual Math Night is coming up next Thursday evening, November 17th from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Come and learn how best to support your child(ren) in math and how to supplement the learning that they are doing in school.  Math Night will begin with a delicious dinner and brief overview, and will then split into break-out sessions based on different grade levels.  These interactive sessions will be repeated so that you can attend two different levels if you have multiple children. Even if you have attended Math Night previously, each grade level is different so it is useful to come again!

We will have fun math-related door prizes that you can win, and, in addition, we will have free childcare available for kids 5 and under - spots are limited so please RSVP now to reserve a spot.  Older children are welcome to accompany their parents to the sessions to demonstrate math concepts and games.
Imagination Theater

Would you like to learn more about what will be presented to Peterson K-3 students on Thursday?  Are you curious about the best ways to talk with kids about staying safe?  Come to a special PAC meeting on Tuesday, November 8th at 8:45 a.m. in the Cafeteria to talk about these issues and learn about available resources and ways to have these conversations with your children.
Crossing Guard

The PAC is working with Peterson administrators and students to try to improve pedestrian safety around the school.  As part of this process, Peterson is working on requesting a crossing guard at the corner of Bryn Mawr & Christiana to assist students and families to cross the street safely at this intersection.

If you agree with having an additional crossing guard, please plan to sign the petition, which will begin circulating this week, and will be at Report Card Pick-Up on Wednesday.
Applying for Peterson in 2017-18

Do you live outside of the neighborhood boundaries and have a child currently attending Peterson?  If you have an incoming student whom you would also like to attend Peterson, you must apply through the sibling lottery by December 9th (PIN numbers must be requested before November 28th). Go to the website of the CPS Office of Access & Enrollment to apply and be sure that you also let Ms. Hindaileh in the Main Office know that you have applied.  You can stop by the office or e-mail her here.

In addition, if you have any friends or relatives outside of the neighborhood boundaries who are interested in Peterson, they also need to apply now to have an opportunity to join our wonderful school community next year!
Report Card Pick-Up

Wednesday, November 9th is the first Report Card Pick-Up of the year, and it provides a wonderful opportunity to meet with your child's teachers to ask questions and get more information about his or her progress.

Are you wondering what to discuss with the teacher?  Here are some questions to consider asking:
  • What subject does my child like most? Least?
  • What can I do to help my child with subjects he or she finds difficult?
  • Is my child working to the best of his or her ability?
  • Does my child participate in class discussions and activities?
  • How is my child doing socially? Does my child have close friends? How well does my child get along with others?
  • How is my child doing emotionally? Have you noticed changes in the way my child acts? For example, have you noticed any squinting, tiredness, or moodiness that might be a sign of physical or other problems?
  • Is my child at grade level in reading and math?  How about the other subjects? If my child is working below grade level, do you know why? What can I do to help my child? Are there options to get him or her extra help at school?
  • How much time should my child be spending on homework?
  • What is the best way to contact you (for example, notes, e-mail, Class Dojo, phone calls, etc.)?
  • What can I do to support you in the classroom?

The PAC was created to help support the role of parents and the school as equal partners in children’s education. The primary purpose of the PAC is to empower parents to inspire and assist their children in achieving their educational goals.

Winter Gear Swap

Do you have any extra child-sized winter coats, gloves, mittens, hats, snow pants, or other winter gear? The Peterson PTA will host a swap during Report Card Pick-Up this week.  Please drop off any unwanted items ahead of time in the box inside the school's front entrance or bring them with you to the gym at Report Card Pick-Up (RCPU).  And if you are in need of any of these items for your child(ren), please feel free to pick them up at RCPU.
Upcoming PAC Meetings

Our next regularly scheduled PAC meeting will be Tuesday, December 6th at 8:45 a.m.  Mark your calendars now for our second annual Literacy Night, which will be held on Thursday, January 26th!
