Hello Colleague

Welcome to the Wakefield District VCS Community Safety Network e-bulletin. Here you will find information on the newly formed network and community safety information for the Wakefield District.

Launch of the Wakefield District VCS Community Safety Network

The launch of the Wakefield District VCS Community Safety Network took place at Lightwaves Community Centre on 11 October. The network has been set up with a small amount of funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner West Yorkshire to facilitate engagement with the Community Safety Partnership (CSP).10 organisations were represented at the launch. Cllr Maureen Cummings, Chair of the CSP outlined the priorities and key aspects for the district which include:
  • Wakefield’s night time economy
  • Honour based violence
  • Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
  • Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE)
  • Domestic abuse. 53% of violent crime is domestic abuse in Wakefield District.
  • Preventing radicalisation
  • Hate crime
  • Modern day slavery
The VCS representative on the CSP is Harry Hudson of Foundation. He sees his role as a link feeding key information to the CSP from the VCS network and vice versa. A range of issues were raised in the meeting for Harry to take forward. If you would like a copy of the minutes, or if you would like to join the network, please contact karen.nicklin@nova-wd.org.uk.

The VCS Network will be facilitated through Nova with 3/4 meetings a year and communications through websites, e-bulletins, e-shots and partners newsletters.

Awareness raising events coming up

What are Street Angels?

Wakefield's Street Angels go out in the City Centre on Friday and Saturday nights and keep Wakefield's night time revellers safe. The Street Angels also volunteer on different days of the week if available. The Angels:
  • Give help and assistance to night revellers who may be too drunk or  have lost their friends. Angels help them find their friends or get them into a taxi home.
  • Give first aid assistance when needed (training provided). If it is above what they are trained to do, they will call an ambulance and wait with the injured party until the emergency services arrive. They are assisted by the Street Marshals if needed. Street Marshals are contracted by Wakefield Council to work alongside the Police assisting in stopping antisocial behaviour within the night time economy.
  • The Street Angels will also be called upon by CCTV to attend someone needing attention.
  • All of the Street Angels are volunteers, and Force Shield Security funds them and pays for their first aid training.
  • Angels work in groups of 2/3 dependent on turnout and are trained on aspects of Risk Management.
  • The Angels also keep logs on all incidents they attend throughout the night. (note books supplied).
Street Angels Wakefield is seeking more volunteers to join the existing team to help the night time revellers of Wakefield stay safe and return home safe. For further information, please call 01924 360603 and ask for James or Yvonne.

Do you know about the Community Trigger?

Community Trigger is a new way you can tell Wakefield Council if you are concerned that they have not taken action against reports of anti-social behaviour (ASB). Wakefield Council, West Yorkshire Police and Wakefield and District Housing work together to tackle ASB. You can activate the Community Trigger if:
  • you have reported ASB on three occasions in the last six months and no action has been taken.
  • different victims have made reports about the same problem five times in the past six months.
  • you have reported a hate incident in the last three months and no action has been taken.
You can find out about how to activate the Community Trigger by visiting the Wakefield Council website
