We know it’s easy to judge, but there is a real person and a hidden story behind everyone who needs our help.

There are many faces of homelessness. From rough sleepers to single parents in inadequate B&B accommodation to young adults sleeping on friends' sofas, they are all people without a home of their own. Some are easy to help; others are very hard to help.

Not everyone can draw on a stable upbringing or the support of friends and family to help overcome life’s setbacks. Drug, alcohol and mental health issues, being jobless or losing a job plus Reading’s lack of affordable housing all make people vulnerable to homelessness.

It's just a week to go until our ninth annual carol service. All the proceeds from Carols by Candlelight help us to prevent homelessness in Reading.

Earley St Peter's Primary School who won our choir competition, Reading Bach Choir and local mezzo-soprano Harriet Kirk will provide the musical entertainment. There will be popular carols to sing-a-long to. The service will include readings from former Reading FC Captain Ady Williams, Lady Stevenson and The Earl of Carnarvon.

Green Park Sleep Out

On a freezing cold November evening, 30 staff from local businesses slept out and raised £10,762 to support the work we do at Launchpad, preventing homelessness in the town.

Staff from James Cowper Kreston, Berkeley Property Developers, Mapletree, Cisco and Nigel Penn-Simkins and his son bedded down in a Green Park car park with just cardboard and a sleeping bag for comfort.

Cisco had one of their international colleagues, Adriana from Mexico join them. She gave up her bed in a four star hotel to support the team sleeping out!

Everyone was awake by 6am cold and exhausted from just one night sleeping rough.

Thank you and well done to everyone who took part and all their sponsors. We hope that one night gave you a small insight into what it's like to sleep rough.

Festive support

As a Reading charity we're so lucky and grateful to have the support of local businesses:

  • Jacobs Jewellers supported us at their Christmas customer evening raising £1,000 from the raffle.
  • While many retailers were slashing prices on Black Friday, FatFace gave away 10% of their profits, choosing us as their local charity to support.
  • Would you like to run dressed as Santa and raise money for Launchpad in this year’s Reading Santa Run on Sunday? Please say when entering that you’re fundraising for Launchpad >
  • Coppa Club, Sonning, Saturday 17 December 10am-12pm, Father Christmas and his reindeer will make a stop on the riverbank and Reading Bach Choir will be singing your favourite Christmas songs. There will be mulled wine, mince pies and a festive menu in support of Launchpad.

People are capable of the most amazing things. Ted* suffered from appalling abuse in his early teens. He became an alcoholic and lived on the streets. He has now been at Launchpad for over two years and has grown and developed. He now volunteers for a number of local charities. Read more >
