The health of the UK’s ageing population
The British Medical Association has published Growing older in the UK: a series of expert-authored briefing papers on ageing and health. This report focuses on how the health and life chances of older people of this and future generations are harmed by holes in the safety net of health, social and other welfare services. Across the report’s six chapters it identifies how older people’s health and that of their carers is affected from experiences throughout their lives as far back as childhood. The report also pinpoints established links between patients’ social circumstances that influence the quality of their lives significantly.
News story: Increase in the number of people dying with dementia
29 September, 2016
The proportion of people dying with a recorded dementia diagnosis has more than doubled since 2001.
Improving end of life care: dying with dementia
Public Health England has published data aimed at helping policy makers and commissioners deliver high-quality end of life care to people with dementia. The Dying with dementia resources examine the deaths of people recorded with dementia between 2012 and 2014. The findings suggest that people who live in more deprived areas die with dementia at a younger age than those who live in more affluent areas. There are also considerable differences between the place of death for people who have dementia and the general population.

NIHR evaluations, trials and studies

Social action to support older people
The Nuffield Trust has published Harnessing social action to support older people. This research report present the findings of an evaluation of seven social action projects designed to use volunteers to offer support to older people, improve their wellbeing and increase their capacity to live independently. The projects were funded from the Reducing Winter Pressures Fund. The report describes the projects; the challenges faced in setting up services; the impact of these projects on subsequent hospital use; and the experience that older people, volunteers and NHS staff had with the projects.
Falls in hospital
The Royal College of Physicians has published a patient leaflet Falls Prevention in Hospital: a Guide for Patients, their Families and Carers. This guide is designed to help prevent serious injury and unnecessary cost to the NHS caused by older people tripping or falling when they are in hospital.
Press release: Public unaware of the factors that increase the risk of dementia LINK not working
26 October, 2016 at 12:15am
Just 2% of people in Britain can identify all the health and lifestyle factors that can increase risk of developing dementia.
Unmet mental health needs of older people
According to a new Age UK report, Hidden in plain sight, the current availability of mental health services does not meet the increasingly high demand from the ageing population. The report revealed that currently 3 million people in the UK over the age of 60 are living with depression. It also found that the NHS is not providing those in later life with mental health problems with sufficient treatment options, such as talking therapies and integrated care plans. Over a third of Mental Health Trusts in England have no policies for providing integrated care for people over 65 with both mental and physical health needs.
Attitudes to dementia
Public Health England has published findings from the 2015 British Social Attitudes survey on attitudes to dementia in Britain. While a majority of people have known someone with dementia and knowledge of the symptoms of dementia is high, there are clear gaps in public knowledge of the risk factors. There is also evidence of stigmatising attitudes towards people living with dementia.

News story: Listening to people with dementia and their carers
2 November, 2016
A new listening programme to find out more about the experiences of people with dementia and their carers starts in England.
Older people and social care need
The following information has been published relating to the care of older people:
- Analysis of unmet need in older people - Age Concern finds that nearly 1 in 8 older people are struggling without the help they need to carry out essential everyday tasks, such as getting out of bed, going to the toilet, washing and getting dressed.
- Survey of homecare workers – this Alzheimer’s Society survey shows that 38% of homecare workers have no dementia training and 71% do not receive dementia training that is accredited. The society suggests this is leading to many people ending up in costly hospital or care home admissions when they could have stayed at home.

Alzheimer’s Research UK - Prevention and Risk Reduction Fund
The Prevention and Risk Reduction Fund provides funds for primary prevention and risk reduction research that have potential to significantly alter the course of cognitive decline in populations that are at-risk of Alzheimer’s disease and/or other dementias.
Alzheimer’s Research UK will run two workshops prior to the deadline to encourage collaborative thinking around each of the priority areas set by Alzheimer’s Research UK and to help develop research ideas for future applications.
This is a one-off call for applications. The deadline is Friday 31 March 2017. Applicants will be notified of the decision by the end of July 2017.
