The Chapter Meeting Menu | December 2016

NEARLY 14 YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG! Our founding chapter in Greenville, SC was recently recognized for its long-time service. From Co-Founder Marsha Wallace's birthday dinner in Jan. 2003, many passionate Chapter Leaders and members have kept this chapter vibrant over the years. Much thanks to all of them and a special thank-you to current Chapter Leaders Connie Williamson and Cindy Henry.

Giving Tuesday Participation Challenge

Thank you to everyone who has made their ONE SPECIAL GIFT to our 13th Month Annual Appeal.  We appreciate every donation and every chapter fundraiser. Be sure to check out the next issue of The Dish (on Nov 29) for more info on how our wonderful chapters and members are supporting the annual appeal.

We are now over half way to our 2016 goal of $360,000. Given that one third of donations are typically received in December, we are on track to reach our goal, but we still need your help!

Once again, we will have a Giving Tuesday Participation Challenge. Our goal is to get 1,000 individual donors in 10 days, starting on Giving Tuesday (Nov. 29) and ending on Dec 8.  Last year, we had a similar challenge with 462 participants.  Let’s really go for 1,000 donors this year!

This year, we have an added incentive. One of our members has agreed to make a special donation if we achieve our goal of 1,000 challenge participants. More details will be announced on Giving Tuesday. Stay tuned!

Giving Tuesday is a great time to make your 13th Month donation if you have not already done so. Please continue to encourage your chapter members to give, and thank you so much for all your efforts.

Our Featured Grantee: iACT in Chad

DONATE
There are many reasons to love this month’s grantee: its focus on forgotten Darfuri refugees, emphasis on early childhood education in refugee camps, and empowerment of refugee women. You will also love the grantee video with its adorable children!

DFW’s $49,320 grant will support the Little Ripples project in the Goz Amer refugee camp in Chad, the home to the largest population of refugees from the civil war in Sudan.  Little Ripples is an education program of iACT, the only organization in these camps that focuses on early childhood education and offers refugee women leadership development opportunities.

Sustained Funding Grantee – Shining Hope for Communities

Many of us remember the little girls in the red sweaters and blue dresses. We especially remember the light they shine in the depths of the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya.   They are the girls of Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), DFW’s featured grantee in June 2011 and our sustained funding grantee this month.  DFW’s $60,000 grant over three years supports SHOFCO’s Maternal and Child Health Incentives Program. The program aims to reduce high child morbidity and mortality rates by encouraging mothers to seek regular prenatal, postnatal and child welfare services.

The Proven Platter – Sweet Potato and Okra Stew

By Linda McElroy, DFW Recipe Curator and Chapter Leader of WA, Seattle-1

The Republic of Chad, located in northern Central Africa, is the subject of our focus and our dining destination this month. Okra is one of the most commonly consumed vegetables there. It is used both to thicken sauces and as a vegetable used in preparation of soups and stews. I suppose you either love okra or hate it, but as it happens, I love it! And since I’ve yet to post a recipe calling for okra, I think okra’s time in the spotlight has come.

MEETING IDEAS & SUGGESTIONS
Icebreakers Icebreakers
DFW’s Dinner Affirmation is a powerful and inspiring statement shared at many chapter meetings. In this affirmation, “We recognize the powerful associations of women to food, life, and nurture in all cultures. We honor the importance of those.”  Our suggestion for this month’s icebreaker is to ask each of your members to share their own connections between food, life and culture. Perhaps a special tradition or recipe handed down by generations? Or, ask each member to share what DFW's Dinner Affirmation means to them.
Discussion Questions for Discussion
  1. How do you think increasing leadership qualities in refugee teachers will affect their students in the future?
  2. How will the refugee camps change when women have a stronger voice in decision making?
  3. How can education help refugees overcome the atrocities they have endured?

Celebrating International Day of the Girl and
Supporting DFW Too!

By Cynthia Sawtell, Mentor in our West Region, and Chapter Leader of CA, San Anselmo-1

On Oct. 9, the three chapters of Marin County, CA (San Francisco area) hosted a public event in honor of International Day of the Girl Child.  The concept was to share with a broader circle of women the work that DFW has done for girls.  We had three goals in mind:  1) to spread the word that investing in girls is critically important for spreading peace and prosperity in the developing world; 2) to do this outreach in hopes of gaining new members; and 3) to raise a little money for DFW.  We called the event “Celebrate The Girl”.
