| The Road Safety Network Gets its Road Ribbon on! |
|
| Individuals, communities and organisations are getting creative for the 2016 Road Ribbon for Road Safety® campaign. |
|
Many have erected displays and hosted events since the campaign commenced on Sunday, 20 November. So far, more than 39,000 ribbons have been distributed through the 56 local events and displays.

Goldfields-Esperance region embraces 2016 campaign
Councils, organisations and agencies in the Goldfields-Esperance region have embraced the 2016 Road Ribbon for Road Safety® campaign.
The Kalgoorlie-Boulder RoadWise Committee, together with the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder hosted a successful launch of the campaign on Sunday 20 November at the Boulder Markets.
The Kalgoorlie-Boulder RoadWise Committee also incorporated Road Ribbon for Road Safety® into a stall at the recent Seniors Expo and the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s Lighting of the Christmas Tree event. |

| Remembering Road Traffic Victims in Gosnells |
|
| The Gosnells RoadWise Advisory Group held their annual, World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims event, at Thornlie Christian College last month. |
|
Each year the City of Gosnells RoadWise Advisory Group provide the opportunity for a local school to host an event to remember victims of road trauma and learn more about road safety.
This year Thornlie Christian College provided the venue and students heard presentations from a range of speakers. These included Principal Bill Innes; City of Gosnells Mayor Olwen Searle; Rob Coales, a former police officer, who related his experience of attending serious and fatal crashes and having to inform family members; and Sharon Knapp who spoke about her story as a mother of a young man who was seriously injured in a crash.

| Farewell Gavan Hayllar |
|
| WALGA's RoadWise will farewell Road Safety Advisor (South West) Gavan Hayllar this month. |
|
Gavan joined RoadWise in March 2011 and will leave the team prior to the Christmas break. We wish Gavan all the best for his new adventures.
The Road Safety Advisor position will be advertised in the new year. |

| Have You Seen the 'Slow Down, Enjoy the Ride' Video? |
|
| Have you seen the Esperance RoadWise Committee’s ‘Slow Down, Enjoy the Ride’ harvest road safety video? |
|
The video, which received funding through the Government of Western Australia’s Road Safety Community Grants Program was developed and produced locally, features local people and uses the “Slow Down, Enjoy the Ride” poem written last year (2015) by Shire of Esperance President Cr Victoria Brown and Esperance RoadWise Committee member, Tiffany Brown.
With more than 245,000 views on the Esperance RoadWise Facebook page already, the video is a great reminder for all road users currently involved with harvest to slow down and enjoy the ride.
Although the video (and the poem) focus on harvest, which impacts several regions in WA, the overall ‘Slow Down, Enjoy the Ride’ message is relevant to all road users as we work towards achieving safe speeds on our roads.

| Tim’s Ride Promotes the ‘Share the Roads’ Message |
|
| The Town of Cottesloe supported the annual Tim’s Ride cycling event held on Saturday 12th November. |
|
The event is in memory of Tim Anderson who was killed while training for the charity Ride for Youth in 2012.
Town of Cottesloe Councillor Sally Pyvis said it was tragic that over a six-year period from 2010 to 2015, 28 cyclists had been killed on WA roads.
More than 300 riders participated in the event which aims to promote cycling safety by encouraging cyclists to be visible and motorists to share the roads with cyclists.

| Planning for Road Safety in Onslow |
|
| Road safety stakeholders in Onslow met during November to develop strategies to improve road safety outcomes for Onslow residents and visitors. |
|
With continued growth in the coastal Pilbara town, road safety stakeholders including WA Police, Chevron, Onslow School and WALGA RoadWise are working on a 2017 action plan to address local road safety issues.
Strategies being considered include a bike safety project, school based road safety programs and a general road safety awareness campaign.
These actions will build on existing local road safety activities including the implementation of the Please Slow Down Consider Our Kids bin stickers project, distribution of I slow down in Onslow bumper stickers, management of the Local Area Targeted Enforcement signs and delivery of child car restraint presentations.

| Carnarvon Seniors Talk Road Safety |
|
| Carnarvon RoadWise Committee members recently joined forces with the Carnarvon Senior Citizens Group to workshop local road safety issues and obtain valuable input for the Committee’s planning process. |
|
During Seniors Week around 35 members of the Carnarvon Senior Citizens Group participated in a road safety workshop to learn more about safe road use, travelling and trip planning, motorised scooters, road rules, managing risks and health issues.
Carnarvon RoadWise Committee member Gwenda Kempton, a Regional Transport Officer with the Department of Transport, informed the group about changes to licensing and distributed some useful resources.
The second half of the workshop provided an opportunity for participants to discuss local road safety issues and provide suggestions for solutions.
Outcomes from the workshop were considered by the Carnarvon RoadWise Committee as part of the development of the Committee’s 2017 Action Plan.
The Committee will continue to work with Carnarvon seniors and other groups to improve road safety for Carnarvon residents and visitors. |

| Rio Tinto Taking the Lead |
|
| It may only be small in the scheme of things, but the Rio Tinto operations in Broome are taking the lead by ensuring its staff and patrons get the road safety message. |
|
Belt Up: You’re worth holding onto signs will be placed at Rio’s four remote training workshops in communities on the Dampier Peninsula and also at its town office in Broome.
The Broome RoadWise Committee, as part of its Broome Road Safety Enhancement Project, donated the signs to local agencies and businesses – to be placed in prominent places in order to remind staff and patrons to always belt up.
Other agencies to be included in the project include the Commonwealth Bank, Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Council (KAMSC), Shire of Broome and Broome Police.
Funding for round one of the project was made possible through the Shire of Broome Community Grant Program.
The non-use of restraints is particularly problematic in the Kimberley region. Seat belts were not worn in 31 per cent of killed and serious injury (KSI) crashes from 2004-2013 in the Kimberley.

| A Road Safety Trio for the City of Greater Geraldton |
|
| The City of Greater Geraldton (CGG) RoadWise Committee combined Road Ribbon for Road Safety®, Blessing of the Roads and the launch of a refurbished road safety display trailer into one major local road safety event held on Monday, 28 November. |
|
| The City of Greater Geraldton is taking a stand against road deaths and serious injuries resulting from crashes in the region. Last year, 17 people died in road crashes in the Midwest/Gascoyne region and close to 100 people were seriously injured.
Chairperson of the Geraldton RoadWise Committee, Mid West Industry Road Safety Alliance and Councillor Bob Hall said road safety was everyone’s responsibility and the launch of the new RoadWise Road Safety Trailer at the start of this year’s Road Ribbon for Road Safety® campaign would make it easier to get the message into the community.
Refurbishment of the road safety display trailer was made possible thanks to WA Police, the Government of Western Australia's Road Safety Community Grants Program, Department of Social Services, RAC, City of Greater Geraldton and in-kind contributions from Westruck Commercial Refinishing.

| Drink and Drug Driving Education for Workplace Employees |
|
| The Water Corporation's Balcatta office held a workplace road safety event for one week in October as part of the 2016 National Safe Work Month (supported by Safe Work Australia). |
|
Road safety banners were displayed in the office to provide information about driver distraction and wearing a seat belt. In addition, a crash trailer was displayed outside the building to raise awareness of road safety.
Several workplace teams took part in drink and drug driving road safety activities such as picking up items or walking whilst wearing fatal vision goggles that demonstrate the effects of drinking alcohol.
Adrian Dilorito (pictured below) said it was amazing how hard it was to first see and then to try and pick up something or move around with the goggles on.
Staff also tried their hand at estimating what a standard drink looks like for certain alcohol beverages.
The event took place during the same week that the Western Australia Government introduced the Alcohol Interlock Scheme aimed at reducing the road safety risk of alcohol-impaired driving.

| Schools’ Seat Belt Project Winds Up |
|
| More than 500 students have now completed the Kimberley Regional Schools’ Design Your Own Seat Belt Project. |
|
The project goal was to engage communities throughout the region in a vehicle restraint awareness and education program.
Each school was provided with a pack including the necessary educational resources to complete the project. Funding for the project was provided through a Government of Western Australia's Road Safety Community Grant.
School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA) and RoadWise jointly supported the project which is likely to continue in 2017.
