1.Question interview: Stan Wilcox - Athletic Director - Florida State
While there's been reams of reports, analysis & speculation on the NFL's dipping TV ratings, finally a piece on how college FB is faring as we near the end of the season. If flat is the new up, then we're looking good. "To date, college football across all nationally-rated networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and FS1) is averaging 2,011,000 viewers per game (255 games), which is down 27,000 viewers per game from last season (one percent)." Fox Sports EVP for Research, League Operations & Strategy Mulvihill point to new star power every year, plus an exciting brand of FB. Key note: The top-rated games of each week this season are up 10% compared to the same cohort from 2015. ESPN SVP of Global Research & Analytics Bulgrin believe the College FB Playoff setup & simply the raw number of teams around the nation has led to consistent college viewership where the NFL has faltered. A bit more. (link)
Syracuse AD Wildhack covers a couple of angles in a radio interview, touches on the potential of other schools trying to hire FB HC Babers, "I think in the era we live in there's so much speculation in terms of coaching in any sport. A lot of teams these rumors are 100 percent unfounded and 100 percent fiction. We have to take everything with a grain of salt. Coach is 100 percent committed to the university, 100 percent committed to this team." Wildhack also responded to marketplace concerns about hoops games not being on local TV & instead on the ACC's new digital play, ACC Network Extra, notes the enhanced exposure for Olympic sports as part of the move. (link)
Purdue: AD Bobinski said to be closing in on his FB HC hire, noted earlier in the week on a radio interview, "We have a goal in mind of having this thing accomplished and hopefully announced as close to the end of the regular season as you possibly can. You don't want to get into that next week when it becomes kind of a quagmire out there when other jobs come open. We'd like to take advantage of this time and get ourselves in a position where we're ready to go as close to the end of the regular season as we can. I think we'll be able to hit that." (link); Four Boilermaker FB student-athletes have been accused of sexually assaulting two female students back in mid-October. Key note, no charges have been filed in the case. (link)
Wake Forest FB HC Clausen on reports that Louisville may have had knowledge of the Demon Deacons game plan in advance of last Saturday night's game, "There was somehow a breach. I’ve shared it with our (athletics director) and we're trying to find out what happened." AD Wellman indicates he's talked to ACC Commish Swofford & Cards AD Jurich. UofL FB HC Petrino: "We take a lot of pride in the way we operate our program. As I've stated already this season, my coaching philosophy has always been to play the game with sportsmanship. Right now, our focus is on our game (Thursday) at Houston and finishing the 2016 season strong." (link)
Yesterday I touched on momentum at DePaul & that's now probably an understatement given news of Wintrust stepping up to invest in the naming rights for the new Event Center at McCormick Square. It's a 15-year deal reported to be worth $22M over its lifetime. Official name of the venue will be "Wintrust Arena." Blue Demons AD Lenti-Ponsetto excited for youth initiatives Wintrust will also bring to the table, says the goal all along was to find a Chicago-based brand who shared the same "beliefs and values" as DePaul. Big win. (link)
Van Wager Sports & Entertainment continues adding to its growing portfolio, strikes a deal with the America East Conference for multimedia & sponsorship rights. Commish Huchthausen believes increased exposure & revenue will result, along with "dynamic marketing opportunities." VWSE EVP Palisi: "The collection of schools – all sitting along the I-95 corridor, from Boston to Baltimore – represents what college athletics is all about. With a high priority on academics, leadership, and athletic excellence, the America East Conference has always been a beacon for others to follow. To be able to bring that product to a wider audience is going to be a great experience." (link)
From the IndyStar on developments yesterday in Notre Dame's records battle with ESPN, "The Indiana Supreme Court has ruled that a private university can maintain a police force that is not subject to Indiana's Access to Public Records Act." You may recall that ESPN had requested documentation of student-athlete arrests by the Notre Dame police department, which after a number of legal maneuvers led to yesterday's outcome. ESPN: "We are extremely disappointed by the ruling and what it represents for public transparency." The topic is likely far from being put to bed as state lawmakers will debate the ability for a private school to shield records. More. (link)
Prairie View A&M AD Robinson adds the title of VP after four productive years leading the Panthers. Facility upgrades have been a key staple of Robinson's tenure, as has APR success & strong competitive results. Prior to returning to Prairie View, where he previously served as AVP of Athletic Compliance & Academic Advising, Robinson was AD at Mississippi Valley State. (link)
Washington State FB student-athlete Barber, who had been suspended from the university for an alleged assault back in the summer, has been reinstated after a Superior Court judge granted a stay to his suspension imposed by WSU's student conduct board. Judge Frazier pointed to the university not following proper procedure in the handling of Barber's situation. Barber will rejoin the Cougars, but the decision on if he'll play or not is up to HC Leach. (link)
You'll need to grab a chair for this long read from FastCompany on where WME-IMG is headed under co-CEOs Whitesell & Emanuel. Much of the piece centers on the company integrating vertically to capture more cash-flow around the leveraging of content, as well as the high profile integration of UFC, but there's also specific mention of IMG College, "critics are quick to point to the underperformance of IMG College, which sells media rights for university-sports powerhouses." Sounds like a new name is in the works for WME-IMG as its private valuation is expected to hit $5.5B. New co-Prez Shapiro, who SBJ's Smith says will be interfacing more on the college business, gets some good coverage as it's his job to package up prime content in the most effective manner. Lots, lots more. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
With only two Americans having won events on the LPGA Tour this year (which will be a record low) and only three American women in the top 20 of the world rankings, ESPNW looks at the "shaky" state of women's golf in the United States. And, college programs are undoubtedly seeing how the globalization of the game is impacting their rosters. Reigning national champion Washington won its title this past Spring with a team comprised of two players from New Zealand, one from England, one from China and one from the United States. Huskies HC Mulflur explained how recruiting has gone global: "We have certain things we look for in a kid, and it just so happens of late people we bring in are international kids. It's a combination of things, but if you put us coaches in a room, we would probably say there is more appreciation for the opportunity. ... It takes a lot of nerve to move 5,000 miles from home to where you don't know anybody. The sacrifices people make are quite great." (link)

In one of the most fascinating case studies in our industry right now, Colorado FB HC MacIntyre has completely turned around the Buffaloes after his first three seasons' results totaling 10-27 (2-25). CU is currently 8-2 (6-1) with a Pac-12 championship in its sights as Washington State visits Boulder on Saturday. Great read here from ESPN's Bonagura on MacIntyre's profile, including the importance of his late father, George, who was an HC at Vanderbilt, his connection with Duke HC Cutcliffe, righting the ship at San Jose State where challenges were aplenty & now the revival job for the Buffs. "When you're a college head football coach and you don’t win games, there's a chance you get fired. I’ve been around it my entire life, so I understand that, but if you sit there and focus on that it doesn't do you any good." (link)
Northern Illinois AD Frazier reflects on last week's 'Chi-Town Showdown' as the Huskies hosted Toledo at the Chicago White Sox's Guaranteed Rate Field. "I saw NIU Athletics on that proverbial "front porch" inviting the people of Chicago, as well as a national television audience on ESPN2, to experience what we have at NIU. […] While we would love for that to have been accompanied by a victory on the field, the positives that came out of the overall event – from engagement, exposure and brand identity to partnerships, visibility and student-athlete experience – cannot be overstated." Points to heightened media coverage in the Chicago market, exposing NIU FB to others in the city who could become season ticket holders & excitement for student-athletes. (link)
Fox Sports leads Feldman & Mandel talked to Korn Ferry's Hughes on their podcast yesterday (starts a bit after the 14-minute mark) to chat about the dynamics of FB HC changes & searches. Hughes starts by noting how Korn Ferry is different from other search firms given its long history of connections throughout the industry, including in the NFL. One sales point is KF only doing one search at a time, as Hughes likens it to Ritz Carlton-type service. "We can get information that other people can't get." More. (link)
Southern has been placed on probation by the NCAA for a lack on institutional control that will stretch for five years. Vacating six years worth of wins is also part of the penalties tied to deep student-athlete certification issues. Scholarship cuts for MBB, WBB, Soccer & Volleyball will be endured through 2018-19. AD Banks called the outcome "fair and equitable," notes that those who had a role in the situation are no longer with the university. (link)
Here's the full report from the Utah Legislature on its probe of Utah Athletics. Some notes that weren't covered yesterday in this space: 1) Deficits in the Pac-12 range from $20M at Colorado to $50M at Washington State; 2) Utes student-athletes are performing very well in the classroom, out pacing peers on the GPA measure; 3) There's been an under-reporting of funding from the university to athletics, a figure that in total was $10.2M last year; and, 4) Some employees job descriptions didn't match with their pay rates. Media & Tech: Interesting read from The Information on how Apple is trying to acquire original content, which could, I suppose, have some tentacles to sports programming. The moral of the story is tough negotiations & Apple's belief it can wait out the current developments in the cable landscape as one moving part. (link); Facebook again says it miscalculated ad engagement numbers as some weekly & monthly numbers were off by up to 55%. Somehow it's also standing by the belief that the bunky reports didn't really impact campaigns. (link); The Dallas Mavericks have launched a Roku channel, but have also gone in on Music.ly & Live.ly. Should your department? (link); Check out some behind the scenes of how the Atlanta Hawks created that ridiculous game intro floor projection. Pretty amazing advanced technology at work. (link)
Maryland's Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism hosted an impressive panel last night that included Big Ten Commish Delany & ESPN Prez Skipper. Delany continued to harp on prospective student-athletes being able to go straight to the pros & not use college athletics as a minor leagues, noted the desire to put "good games, but not the best games" on Friday night, recalls B1G Presidents initially pushing back on a Big Ten Network. Skipper not worried about cord-cutting, says the Worldwide Leader will continue to invest "...in new opportunities to grow new audiences," more. (link)
SEC Commish Sankey working to establish the right procedures for the league to avoid another scheduling situation like it saw from Hurricane Matthew's impact on Florida-LSU FB. "The presidents have made clear to me their intention to address our regulations and bylaws in order to establish a clear path to a decision-making process that gives the commissioner's office authority to resolve scheduling issues in a fair and timely manner. We will use the Hurricane Matthew experience to analyze our processes and to provide clarity to our regulations and bylaws in order to address future interruptions that may be caused by weather or other circumstances." (link)
The Albuquerque Journal explores why ticket sales for New Mexico MBB home games are down again this year and why there has been little buzz generated for the Lobos' game against Abilene Christian on November 30, which will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the program's first regular-season game played in The Pit in 1966. UNM has sold 8,805 season tickets this season, down 12.2% from last season’s mark and 24.3% from the record high set in HC Neal’s first season of 2013-14. The 8,805 season tickets sold this year is the lowest number in at least the past 12 seasons. The dip in sales has also extended to the arena's corporate suites, as the university has sold 28 of the 40 boxes available for the season, but Deputy AD Hutchins says the selling of the suites is an "ongoing process," as the luxury seating can be rented out for single games. (link)
Beer at ballgames: Boise State is remaining cautious when deciding whether alcohol will be sold at Albertsons Stadium. Mountain West peers, Hawaii, Nevada, San Diego State and Colorado State currently allow alcohol sales inside their stadiums. AD Apsey on the issue: "For now, no, I don’t see that [alcohol sales] as a possibility here. If it was something we wanted to consider, we’d have to sit down with the appropriate people, obviously. It has not been discussed on our campus, nor with our State Board. It’s a sensitive issue here in Boise, and we need to respect that." (link)
A $1M donation from alumnus Bush is allowing Michigan State to put up lights at DeMartin Stadium, home to the Spartans' MSOC and WSOC teams. Part of the gift, which was made in support of the Empower Extraordinary campaign, also helped finish the fundraising effort for the Lasch Family Golf Center, as it has been proposed to name the indoor practice area of the facility after Bush. AD Hollis: "The indoor practice area of the Lasch Family Golf Center has already proved its importance since opening last spring. The lights at DeMartin Stadium are really the next step in providing a better fan experience at Old College Field and will help our current and future student-athletes practice and compete in one of the best venues in the Big Ten." (link)
Also noticed: Teamworks acquires Charlotte-based TeamSync, who has a client list 300+ for its collaboration software. (link); Not many details at this point, but Ole Miss Asst. AD for High School Relations has apparently been placed on administrative leave. (link); Michigan FB's 'Summer Swarm' cost $334,712. (link); More back & forth in the Albany-Siena MBB rivalry scheduling debate. (link); The same as Coastal Carolina & Liberty FB will meet for the last time before the Chants are fully a member of the Sun Belt. CCU HC Moglia says Flames' student-athletes talk a lot. (link); New Missouri athletics pay database from STL Today, AD Sterk at a base of $500K. (link); Snapchat has filed for a $25B IPO. (link); DraftKings & FanDuel are even closer to officially merging. (link); The Kansas-Duke MBB match-up on Tuesday night produced an average of 83K views, most-streamed game ever for ESPN. (link); Kent State MBB student-athlete brought fans onto the court for the National Anthem last night. All Arkansas WBB student-atheltels will now stand. (link, link)

Recently, we've seen Presidents/Chancellors named at Cornell, Central Arkansas & Kansas State, just to name a few, with similar hires coming up at the likes of Tennessee, Northern Iowa & Florida Gulf Coast. Around a year ago, 1.Q talked to Florida State Athletic Director, Stan Wilcox, about how an AD can effectively interface with a new university boss, as he did back in 2014 when John Thrasher arrived in Tallahassee, & his perspective is still plenty applicable today. Listen by clicking the link.
