An Interview with the Past President of the IOWPTH and GWHI Founding Member – Rebecca Stephenson

Rebecca Stephenson has served in many leadership roles within her profession as a Women’s Health Physical Therapist.  Included in these positions she served on the Board of Directors of the APTA Section on Women’s Health  and  as a delegate and President of the International Organization for Physical Therapists in Women’s Health (IOPTWH).  She is also a very busy clinician and a strong advocate for Women’s rights.  It is no wonder she has committed herself to the work of the Global Women’s Health Initiative both as a Board Member and as a donor!  What you may not know about Rebecca is that she is also a breast cancer survivor.  The GWHI is focusing this newsletter on Women’s Health and cancer.  This very dedicated physical therapist sat down with us to talk about her past personal struggles as well a her hope and advocacy for Women facing cancer. Rebecca is a board certified women’s health physical therapy and Coordinator Women’s Health Physical Therapy at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. She teaches nationally and internationally on topics of women’s health physical therapy and specializes in obstetrics and pelvic floor disorders.

We are excited about our first steps as an organization to create the framework for our foundation.   
 
What does this mean?  We are in the initial stages of raising “seed” funds which will provide us with the funding to complete our legal responsibilities and fund the creation of our campaign media message.  We will be able to use this message to raise the necessary funds for financing projects and programs to include women’s health physical therapy.

Rebecca G. Stephenson

Dr. Stephenson is a physical therapist and medical writer, currently Coordinator of Women’s Health Physical Therapy and Co Director of the Residency Program at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. She is the immediate past President of the International Organization of Physical Therapists in Women’s Health, (IOPTWH) a sub-group of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT). She has additionally served on many national boards: for the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists and the Section on Women’s Health of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)

Dr. Stephenson graduated from Boston University with a BS in physical therapy
Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Women’s Health Physical Therapy from the American Physical Therapy Association.
Master’s and Doctorate from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions
Certified childbirth educator and certified lymphadema therapist.
Rebecca has received many awards- World Confederation for Physical Therapy for service in May 2015, Section on Women’s Health APTA, Lucy Blair from the APTA in June 2013, Barbara Adams Fellow in the IHP post-Professional Physical Therapy and the Elizabeth Nobel Award from the Section on Women’s Health.

Dr. Stephenson specializes in obstetrics pre and post partum, pelvic floor disorders and trauma, incontinence, lymphadema and orthopedic areas of practice. Her areas of research include high-risk pregnancy and treatment of the breast cancer patient. She is the primary author on Obstetrics and Gynecologic Care in Physical Therapy second edition and additionally has written many chapters, study modules and videos on issues related to women’s health and orthopedics. She is adjunct clinical assistant professor for the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions and lectures nationally and internationally. Dr. Stephenson serves on the rehabilitation advisory board of the World Wide Fistula Fund and along with Terry Benedict founded
