TOUR LEADER TIP OF THE MONTH

Make it personal.

People connect with people! Have a few personal anecdotes ready, even if they’re simply about past tours you’ve done. Opening up about yourself will build a more personal connection with your group. This makes you and the tour more memorable.

INDEPENDENT TOUR LEADER SPOTLIGHT

This month we are shining the spotlight on Ryan Cooper!

Q: Where is your hometown?
A: St. Louis, Missouri
Q: When did you lead your first tour with Scholastica?
A: May 2016. I'm a newbie!
Q: What has been your most rewarding tour leading experience?
A:  I love making connections with our travelers (both young and old), I learn as much from them, as they do from me. Additionally, I'll never forget at the end of my first trip Tour Leading with Scholastica in Washington D.C. (having visited D.C. for the first time ever only a few months prior on the FAM trip), and being told by the chaperones, "it's clear you've been doing this for many years." It made all of the late night study sessions worth it.
Q:What is your favorite place to show a tour group and why?
A: The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. I have been a docent guide at the St. Louis Holocaust Museum and Learning Center for many years, working with survivors and tour groups. The Holocaust is a topic that is incredibly important to me, and I'm always pleasantly surprised when I ask students what they are looking forward to seeing most on their D.C. trip, and the USHMM consistently ranks high on the list. Within the next decade there will be no more Holocaust survivors, so it is up to us to pass along the vital lessons of this period to future generations.
