The UK continues to work towards preventing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by investing in new diagnosis tests and vaccines.

Research and analysis: AMR: summary of the current evidence
16 September, 2016 
Updated document to incorporate the latest evidence of AMR in bacteria and includes new sections on AMR in viruses and in fungi.
Provides an overview of the current situation of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria, viruses and fungi that can cause disease in humans.
 
The Department of Health has published the Government response to the recommendations made in the Lord Jim O’Neill’s independent antimicrobial resistance (AMR) review.  The Government agrees with the review’s analysis that there is an urgent need to both invest in early stage research and the use of diagnostics and stimulate development of new antimicrobial drugs. The Government’s top priority is the commitment to working with international partners to create a global approach to funding new antimicrobials, especially antibiotics.

Prevention of surgical site infection
The World Health Organisation has published Global guidelines on the prevention of surgical site infection. People preparing for surgery should always have a bath or shower but not be shaved, and antibiotics should only be used to prevent infections before and during surgery, not afterwards, according to the new guidelines that aim to save lives, cut costs and arrest the spread of superbugs.  The guidelines are valid for any country and suitable to local adaptations, and take account of the strength of available scientific evidence, the cost and resource implications, and patient values and preferences.

Plans to prevent hospital infections include more money for hospitals who reduce infection rates and publishing E. coli rates by local area.
