Listening to our Hearts and Eating Soup
This month is about feeding our bodies and our souls comfort food through hearty delicious soup and through the magic that is HeartMath®.

Every once in awhile, while idly thumbing through a magazine, I come across a recipe I just must try, that makes the visit to the doctor or dentist or hair salon where I found the magazine completely worth it!  I hope you enjoy this Smashed Squash, Kale and Mushrooms as much as we do.

Meanwhile, my colleague Margaret Heath and I are offering a community HeartMath
® program, "Election Recovery," looking at healing our divided nation from the heart.  Contact us if you want to learn more about the program or about HeartMath®.

“Election Recovery - electing peace, reducing stress & increasing heart”
- Margaret Heath
We are living in times of great change.  All around the world elections are being held that are attempting to redefine policies, alliances and fundamental values.  Our election here in the United States is no exception and it is fair to say that the whole world has been shaken by it.

You, yourself, may have been shaken by it.  No matter which way you may have voted, the last 16 months have left many of us with the depleting effects of chronic and acute stress - in ourselves, in our children and in our communities.

Some are deeply disappointed in the outcome, while some are happy, yet disappointed in the response to the outcome.  We are a nation divided.

So how can we come together?  Clearly not through our ideas about what should or shouldn’t be, what is right or wrong, good or bad.  Those ideas got us here in the first place.  There is always a chasm between your idea and mine.

Rumi tells us:   “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing
and rightdoing there is a field.
                          I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass
the world is too full to talk”

That field is the field of the heart.  Our heart models the capacity to listen to all that goes on within us and to respond accordingly.  It does not favor any one organ.  Supremely present, it selflessly responds in this moment in a way that is highest best for the whole.

When we feel peace, love, compassion, gratitude, tolerance, any core heart feeling, our heart intelligence allows us access to our intuition and the gifts of our higher thinking capacities for envisioning ways to solve problems and find creative, co-collaborative solutions.

Through the heart, we can reach out and touch one another - literally - through the electro-magnetic field that it radiates out, carrying heart frequencies.  We can choose to do this. We can consciously learn how to do this.

In the end, the true outcome of this election will not be determined by who won, but by our collective response to it.  If our response includes the heart, we will be able to bring poise, grace and intelligence into our actions and relationships.  We will be able to meet in that field that is beyond the divide.

Eat Well

Smashed Squash, Mushroom, and Kale Soup (adapted from realsimple.com)

2 Tablespoons olive oil
1 medium red or yellow onion (chopped)
12 ounces mixed mushrooms sliced (try baby bella and shitake)
5 cups vegetable broth
1 medium buternut squash, peeled and cut into chunks
1 package baby kale or about 2-4 ounces.
1/2 cup orzo
  • Heat the oil in a medium stock pot over medium high heat.
  • Sauté the onion until it is soft.  Add some vegetable stock while sautéing if needed.
  • Add the mushrooms and lower the heat.  Cover and cook, stirring occasionally for six to eight minutes. The mushrooms will have released their juices and be soft.
  • Stir in the broth, squash and orzo and bring to a boil.  Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until the squash is tender and the orzo is cooked - 15 minutes..
  • Stir in the kale until just wilted.
  • After ladling into soup bowls, gently use the back of a spoon to smash the squash just a little bit, it will enrich the broth..

Enjoy!
The soup is great the next day.  I usually find I need to add in some additional broth before reheating.
