Let's Talk: Honors College Open Office Hours

If you need a place to reflect, are in need of support, or are looking to talk with someone regarding general concerns, the Honors College staff is available to help.  We will be hosting Open Office Hours this week at the following dates/times, when you can drop by and speak to someone about how you’re feeling:

  • Tuesday, 9:00am–2:30pm
  • Wednesday, 9:00am–1:00pm
  • Thursday, 9:00am–5:00pm
  • Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm

We also want to encourage you to stop by our weekly "Let's Talk" series from 2:00-3:30pm in room South 501 for first-year students, or Coffee with the Deans, Monday-Friday from 10:00-11:00am.

Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program
Tuesday, November 15, 10:00am | HC Fireside Lounge
Interested in pursuing a Ph.D.? The McNair program helps prepare students from low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented backgrounds for doctoral studies. Applications are open for next year's cohort of scholars through November 30. Join McNair staff for coffee, tea, and hot chocolate and learn more about the program.

School of Social Work
Thursday, November 17, 10:00am | HC Fireside Lounge. Talk with staff from Rutgers' School of Social Work to learn about opportunities to serve society in clinical, academic, government, non-profit, and corporate settings throughout the world.

Global Gatherings: Black Lives Matter Translated

Join Professor Edward Ramsamy (Chair, Africana Studies), Professor Ifeyinwa Onyenekwu (Graduate School of Education), and Bashir Herbert (student, SAS) as they discuss the parallels between the Black Lives Matter movement within the United States and abroad, as well as themes that transcend the Civil Rights Movement, Anti-Apartheid Movement, and modern day student-led movements. This Global Gathering is co-sponsored by GAIA, DRC, the Asian American Cultural Center, and the Honors College. Dinner will be served.

Winter Wishes Service Event
Sign up by Thursday, November 17

Co-sponsored by the HC and RUPA, Winter Wishes is an annual holiday-themed event partnering with six preschools in New Brunswick. Register to purchase gifts for a child based on their top three wants (e.g. toys and games) and top three needs (e.g. clothing and winter gear). We ask that you spend a maximum of $20 per child. You will be notified of your child's wants and needs after you register. All gifts must be brought to the Douglass Student Center, Trayes Hall on Tuesday, November 22 between 3:00-7:00pm. Students will receive one HC Serves hour for participating.

Reunite with your wing at the HC Class of 2019 Reunion and become part of a new tradition to support Rutgers Giving Day. Last year, 127 students gave back to the Honors College. RU a trivia buff? Come out and show your skills at Trivia Night. Teams of 4-5 students will have the opportunity to answer Honors College and Rutgers-themed trivia questions in Jeopardy format. Prizes will be given to the winning team! Event hosted by the HC Mentors in Residence.

Alternative Breaks Info Session—TONIGHT, November 14, 9:15pm | HC S126. APPLICATIONS DUE TONIGHT BY 11:59PM! Join the Department of Leadership & Experiential Learning to learn about their leadership development-focused Alternative Spring Break service trip in March 2017. This trip, known as DC LEAD, helps connect service and social justice to leadership development and allows first-year and new transfer students to build a strong community in providing positive change. Join the Student Advisory Board in welcoming representatives from the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, Multicultural Greek Council, and Professional Greek Council to discuss what it means to be a member of a Greek Organization on campus.

Have you completed service with a Rutgers student organization, fraternity or sorority, or another organization outside of Rutgers that you would like to count toward your HC Serves hours? Attend a reflection workshop to delve into your experience through fun and thought provoking activities.

Monday, November 21, 7:00pm | HC S124. Join Douglass Residential College Mentor Adelle for a fun-filled makeup tutorial and discussion about societal pressures and the need to feel "beautiful."

Meme Art Show!—Submissions due Wednesday, November 23. Show off your meme-tastic skills and create memes (any memes!) for the Meme Art Show. Multiple submissions are encouraged for display; however, only one will be entered to win one of three Visa gift cards. Submit your meme(s) and include your name, graduating class, and, if applicable, a title and brief description of your meme(s). For multiple submissions, rank your memes in the order you'd like them to be entered.

Thanksgiving Dinner at the Honors College—Thursday, November 24, 3:00pm | HC N104 and Bishop Field. The Mazzeo Family and Professor Hartman are hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner/Day at the HC, and you're invited! Join us for a meal at 3:00pm, and if you are able to help by bringing or cooking something, you are welcome to come by as early as 8:00am. Please either sign up or email Dr. Mazzeo. Plenty of space for everyone (students and friends). If there is enough interest, there will be a pickup game of US football on the new field.

DRC STEAM Session in NYC—Apply by Thursday, December 1 for January 3-13, 2017, trip.  DRC Members, are you interested in an all-expenses paid 10-day winter session experience in New York City with DRC Innovator in Residence Julia Buntaine? Apply for this immersive experience to meet leaders in the STEAM movement (Science, Technology, Engineering, the ARTS, and Mathematics)—visiting labs, studios, and co-working spaces—enjoy NYC's many cultural sites, and create your own innovations to be presented at a spring symposium. Overnight accommodations provided. To apply, DRC students must answer the following questions:

  1. Why does studying art, science, and technology together sound interesting to you?
  2. What do you hope to get out of this course?
  3. What is your intended major at Rutgers?

Please limit your answers to 250 words or less for each question and email them to Julia Buntaine for consideration. Space is limited.

Big Chill 5k Run/Walk—Saturday, December 3, 9:00am | College Ave Gym. Rutgers Recreation is hosting one of the largest annual 5k races in New Jersey, and we've created an Honors College team! Sign up today and list “Honors College” as the team name. Meet before the start for a big group photo! You will also receive HC Serves hours for participating.

Hult Prize Rutgers Student Team Competition–Apply by Monday, November 21 | Busch Student Center. The Hult Prize Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to launching the world's next wave of social entrepreneurs. It encourages student teams from around the world to solve the planet's biggest challenges with innovative ideas. Winners can launch their ideas with the help of $1 million in seed funding. Register for the Rutgers competition where you will have the opportunity to pitch an idea and advance to regionals, bypassing the normal application process that traditionally consists of 20,000 applicants. This year's challenge is “Refugees—Reawakening Human Potential.” How can your team build scalable and sustainable social enterprises that restore the rights and dignity of 10 million refugees by 2022?

First-Year Fellowship Leadership Certificate ProgramApply by December 4. The Department of Leadership & Experiential Learning is looking for the spring semester's First-Year Fellowship cohort. Participants will engage in workshops throughout the spring semester to develop leadership skills and broaden their networks. The Fellowship is a great venue to build community, grow as a leader, and earn 1.5 credits. Apply

Resident Assistant Info Sessions. Interested in applying to be an RA? Residence Life is having several information sessions during the month of November so you can learn more about the application process, qualifications, and more about the job. Attendance is mandatory to apply.
