The Affordability Issue

A Dangerous Situation - 5" X 7"  - oil on board-  $500
Dear friends and family who love art,

Original art is expensive, fall-off-your-chair-in-disbelief expensive.  It is, however, a unique creation in a world dominated by box stores.
Mother's Day #4 - 7" X 5" - oil on board -$500
Each painting, big or small, is the result of years of training.  It is produced by hand over many hours of squinting and pacing in a little studio crammed with stacked frames, twisted paint tubes, mysterious bottles of foul-smelling varnishes, and cans of frayed brushes.  A painting is characteristic of its painter.  The time and the personal nature of its creation is what you pay for.

Technical Section
This month’s technical section is in two parts.  The first features the beautiful frames made by Rett Ashby at Masterworks Frames.  His sprawling workshop in Orem is stacked with frames of all sizes and shapes under construction and even more foul-smelling varnishes than you would find at my place.
Rett frames the work of nationally known fine arts painters and I am lucky to have found his workshop just a short ride from my studio.  With the purchase price of any of my paintings you get one of Rett’s frames and the painting.  A twofer.
In the next part of the technical section let's talk a little about how a composition is created.  This month, I had a great time figuring out to hang stuff from strings, because it was there and I could.

A Dangerous Situation - under construction
I worked a lot with eggs and marbles.  For one painting I set up a Rube Goldberg composition with a pomegranate, a silver ladle, an egg and a marble. I threw everything at that one.   The first photo below was my setup.  I loved the idea of hanging something with a little weight to it near an eggshell.  The second photo below is a very basic underpainting, raw umber on canvas mounted with linen and toned with burnt sienna.  You can see that I was eager to get to the color.  Several layers of paint came next because I was impatient to get the to more of those delicious purples and reds.  But something bothered me about the composition.  It just didn't fit together, as compelling as the colors and the objects were individually.
After a bit more pacing and staring, I realized that eggshell just didn’t belong there.  Once I bit the bullet and just painted the thing out, the composition fell into place.  It became the trajectory of a hanging marble and its shadow into a silver ladle.  Whew.  It would have been great to see that from the beginning, but better late than never.  Here are the final layers of paint after the eggshell dropped out.
