What a week! Our thoughts have certainly been with the many people who have been directly or indirectly affected by the earthquakes and flooding. We want to do our bit to help those who need helped and we are doing this by supporting a WBHS Hostel initiative. They are taking some boys with their van and a trailer up to North Canterbury with supplies on Saturday. I would like to ask you to support this by providing a non perishable food item OR a cleaning item OR bottled water, over the next two days. We will box these up and deliver them to WBHS on Friday evening for their distribution on Saturday.
We have just over 4 weeks of school to go - and while it might feel that we are on the 'downside' of the term - we certainly still have 4 weeks to go! This equates to 10% of the school year and 10% of learning time. Teachers are in the middle of writing reports, however are also very conscious of still wanting to deliver their quality programmes over the next few weeks. We are finding that people are collecting children earlier and earlier if heading away for off site activities after school. Teachers plan varied programmes to meet a variety of interests and needs. A child who might leave one hour early on a particular day, may well miss their only exposure to something like their Topic, PE or the Arts that they were going to get that week. If that happens every week - they may well miss one whole curriculum area. Please take this into consideration if you choose to do this.
Good luck to our North Otago Athletes who are competing in Oamaru on Monday afternoon. Yet again we have a large and very capable group heading down. All the best!

Writing Challenge
This week, the children had to create a new animal. They had to give a bit of information about it, like where it lives and what it looks like. I really enjoyed reading these. There were some very creative new animals! Don’t forget that parents can enter too!! I am yet to have an entry from home! Here are the winning entries-enjoy!
The Red Bull Fang
The Red Bull Fang can bite through steel. He has gills. He is the strongest animal in the whole world. He is the fastest animal in the world. He is AWESOME!

As it comes past, all the sea creatures swim away as they get a glimpse of its mammoth teeth. Its age is unknown. It can seek thermal radiation. It lives where no-one knows. It spits poisonous acid out of its butt. It has a turtle shell to make it bigger than it seems. When it’s angry, its horns grow bigger and bigger. It eats blue whale. Its fin’s glow in the depths of the ocean. Its eyes are brown and green to camouflage it. I wouldn’t want to go swimming near that.

Death song
Well you probably think this is a cute little pegasus but…
...NO! If you come across a death song and you are not a friend, make sure you don't look at it in the eye otherwise you will turn to stone. This horse looking creature, has razor sharp teeth to eat both plants and meat. These creatures have soft, soft skin so whenever they want, they can turn invisible . Now you may be wondering why they are called a Death Song. This should also tell you how they catch their prey. They are called a Death Song because they make a sound like a song that lures other animals to where they are. Now that is all any human being who has survived, knows about.

Sheepercow
Some live in scary jungles, they eat food such as brown dead rotten leaves and green weeds from the stream near the jungle. They drink big raindrops that fall from the thundery black sky. They are called Sheepercow because it acts like a sheep and a cow, grazing in a mob.
The Sheepercow’s job is to keep the jungle safe. They have big wings and tan coloured feathers, which they use to glide on the wind above the jungle. They are as fast as a cheetah and can pounce like a cat to scare the predators away. Sheepercows are very active protectors, they never give up. Be extremely careful when you go past them as they can bite if annoyed. The Sheepercow are endangered and live in New Zealand.

Our Hangi preparation is underway. Thanks to Mike Mullins from Youthtown who has kindly supplied us with all of the gear. Thank you also to those of you who have offered your donations of food. The Silver Fern Rally is coming to the Haka Pass and have asked the Friends of the School to help with marshalling in exchange for a generous donation.
When? Monday 28th November.
We need marshalls from approx 12.00pm to 4.30pm

RUGBY SEVENS
This Saturday (19th Nov) the Redpaths Referees Sevens are being held at Whitestone Contracting Stadium.
Mens and ladies sevens games will be played.
Teams include Otago, Canterbury, Southland, North Otago, Mid Canterbury & South Canterbury.
Games kick off at 11am with the last game scheduled for 5:15pm.
Gold coin entry.
Food & beverage stalls on site.
