DECEMBER'S LIFE SKILLS - Honesty - You can trust in me to be prepared.

Too Many Tamales ~ By: Gary Soto

Christmas Eve started out so perfectly for Maria. Snow had fallen and the streets glittered. Maria's favorite cousins were coming over and she got to help make the tamales for Christmas dinner. It was almost too good to be true when her mother left the kitchen for a moment and Maria got to try on her beautiful diamond ring . . .

This is the story of a treasure thought to be lost in a batch of tamales; of a desperate and funny attempt by Maria and her cousins to eat their way out of trouble; and the warm way a family pulls together to make it a perfect Christmas after all.

Getting Out of Bed and to School on Time!  www.parenting.org

Help your child get up and out of bed on time with these tips:
  • If your child is in elementary school, he/she should get 10—11 hours of sleep a night.  Getting to bed earlier may help him/her rise on time.
  • Ask your child if there’s a reason he/she doesn’t want to go to school.  A bad test score or embarrassing situation may be the reason he/she doesn’t want to get out of bed.
  • Offer a treat worth getting out of bed on time for!  A favorite breakfast cereal or donut on the weekend may be just the incentive he/she needs to get up on time during the week.
  • Try a morning shower.  Get your child out of bed and have him/her take a shower to help him/her wake up.
  • Be firm every day.  Explain that going to school is not a choice, it’s a must.  Let your child choose what shoes he/she wants to wear but not what time he/she gets up.
Messages and Deliveries

To minimize classroom interruptions and protect instructional time, the office staff is not able to deliver personal messages or items (i.e., homework, lunch money, books, planners, PE Clothing, etc.) during the school day.  The office will only deliver messages in the case of an actual emergency.

Miscellaneous items brought to the office for students will be placed in the “Student Pick Up” area.  If your child thinks a delivery may be made they are encouraged to check with the office.

Lunches brought in for students will be placed on the “Lunch Cart” and brought out to the lunch area during your child’s lunch time.

HEARING LOSS
Noise can cause permanent hearing loss that cannot be restored.  Noise induced hearing loss can be PREVENTED!
Hearing loss can happen at any age.  A growing number of children and adolescents are damaging their hearing by exposure to noise.  Some ways to help prevent hearing loss in your child:
  • Monitor the sound level of your child’s personal listening device (such as when using ear buds).
  • Limit the time your child spends in noisy places.
  • Listen to toys prior to purchase.
  • Monitor the noise levels that your child is exposed to.  If you have to shout for your child to hear over his or her recreational activities, the noise is too loud.
  • Have your child wear ear protection when around loud equipment such as lawn mowers, power saws, leaf blowers, motorbikes or snowmobiles.
  • Turn down the volume of the TV, radio and other devices at home.
School nurses in the Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District perform routine hearing screening for grades K, 2, 5 and 8.  Other students are screened as needed.  If you have a  concern regarding your child’s hearing, please contact the school nurse or your health care provider.
Building Good Character

Good character is taught, not naturally acquired. You are your child’s first teacher and your words and actions have tremendous impact.  Use every opportunity to teach good character.  It will give your child the tools needed to make wise decisions throughout their lives.
  • Help your child learn to use words, not violence.
  • Teach responsibility by having your child pick up their belongings, and do simple household chores.
  • Urge your child to take turns, work with others, and share supplies.  This will help to instill cooperation and fairness.
  • Insist on good manners and respectfulness (e.g. saying, “please” and “thank you”, not interrupting when others are speaking, obeying directions).  Teach the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated.
  • Discuss the importance of honesty and trustworthiness.
  • Encourage independence.  Allow your child to make choices and learn to accept their consequences.
  • Point out positive examples in real life or in TV shows or movies.  If you see a negative example, ask your child what the person should have done.
