#SaugaGives 2016

Give local and give green for the season

Ecosource is proud to be a founding charity partner of MississaugaGives. For #GivingTuesdayCA (November 29th, 2016), we are asking our supporters to make a donation to Ecosource on behalf of a friend, family member, employee, or client as a gift of the season. Your donation supports our vision to move public attitudes and perceptions about environmental issues toward responsible personal action.

To launch Giving Tuesday we will be joined by student volunteers from Holy Name of Mary College School. They will spend the day preparing seed packs and natural supplies for upcoming holiday crafting at local seniors’ homes. Thank you to all our volunteers and donors for helping us grow a green community.

Youth Rain Action

Youth volunteers design and install rain garden

Throughout the summer a group of enthusiastic youth volunteers have been hard at work, first learning about using rain gardens for stormwater management and later, getting their hands dirty installing a rain garden.

Participants attended workshops with experts in eco-friendly design to find out about plant selection and rain garden installation techniques. Then, they applied their knowledge to come up with three original rain garden designs, highlighting different themes — pollinator, formal, and naturalized. Afterwards, it was time to open the voting to the public. Over 200 people voted for their favourite design, with the pollinator garden coming in first place!

After finalizing the design with our partners at the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, it was time to install. Participants spent nine hours in the rain installing the winning garden. Despite the long day, all that hard work was worth it to have a beautiful rain garden, complete with educational signs, which manages runoff and educates visitors. We invite the community to visit the new rain garden at Sheridan Nurseries Etobicoke/East Mississauga Garden Centre.

Did you know?
Rain gardens are designed to receive stormwater and allow it to infiltrate into the soil. This means that less water rushes into waterbodies after a storm, decreasing the demand on stormwater infrastructure, improving the filtration of contaminants, and replenishing groundwater supplies.

Holy Name of Mary College School
Recycles Right!

Region of Peel’s Waste Reduction Campaigns
are in full swing

Let’s celebrate Holy Name of Mary College School and their ongoing success on their Secondary Recycle Right campaign! Through the Region of Peel’s Waste Reduction Programs, delivered by Ecosource, students have been engaged in contemporary waste issues and are fostering critical thinking through hands-on learning during October and November 2016.

In 2015/2016, schools participating in Whole School Waste Reduction Campaigns reduced garbage by 26%, with Lincoln M Alexander Secondary School reducing recycling contamination by 47%!

We are about halfway through Holy Name of Mary College School’s campaign and we are excited for the final result! Congratulations to the staff and students on their accomplishments so far!

#GrownInMississauga Taste
Tested in Schools

Fall veggies bring new flavours to hospitality classes

This fall, we partnered with hospitality classes in Peel Region to pilot a fall Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program with our very own #GrownInMississauga produce. Students from three high schools had a chance to see first-hand the vast variety of produce we are able to grow in Mississauga and how colourful and flavourful freshly harvested produce can be!

Each class received a basket of seven to ten different organic vegetables grown at our Iceland Teaching Garden every other week from September to October. Then, they had the opportunity to get creative in the kitchen with the local ingredients such as kale, ground cherries, and Easter Egg radishes. Along with getting fresh, local, and community-grown produce, the students also came out to the Iceland Teaching Garden to, not only see where the produce comes from, but also get their hands dirty and contribute to growing their vegetables. This was a rewarding experience for all.

Thank you to teachers and students from John Cabot S.S., St. Aloysius Gonzaga, and St. Marcellinus S.S. for helping us test this exciting initiative. We plan to expand the program next season. If your school would like to participate in our 2017 Fall CSA, please contact Yvonne Lau at ylau@ecosource.ca for more information.

Did you know?
CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a system where the food grower and customer have a direct and mutually supporting relationship. CSA is generally a box program where customers pay a fixed price prior to the growing season and then receive a regular box of seasonal, local, and organic produce for a set number of weeks.
