OVERVIEW: On 16 November 2016, during the
World Antibiotic Awareness Week (14-20 November 2016), the World Health Organization (WHO) will host an event bringing together stakeholders across multiple sectors to increase awareness of global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and encourage best practices to avoid the further spread of AMR. The panel discussion will focus on AMR’s impact on consumers and the potential of different stakeholders to galvanize action.
The event builds on the momentum achieved by the United Nations (UN) High-Level meeting on AMR in September 2016, where Heads of State committed to a broad, coordinated approach across multiple sectors to combat AMR.
AMR is one of the greatest threats of our time. Rising to dangerously high levels all over the world because of overuse and misuse of antibiotics in humans and animals, resistance compromises our ability to treat infections. Without concrete action to stop the spread of AMR, trillions of dollars and millions of lives are at risk.
WHAT: Moderated discussion addressing the challenges of AMR, especially the risks that AMR poses to consumers and the roles of different actors (including policymakers, consumers, food producers and the healthcare industry) in spreading awareness and advocating for appropriate antibiotic use.
WHEN: 16 November 2016 | 1:15-2:45 p.m. ET
WHO: Moderated by Dr. Nata Menabde, Executive Director of the World Health Organization Office at the UN
The panel will feature a range of speakers with diverse AMR-related experience, including:
