Open Ag Funding Round Table Discussion: Multiple sector codes
|

We know from our research that those working in agriculture and food security need more detail about the specific themes, sectors and value chains that other projects are addressing, and for various reasons. We also know that using the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) Standard, it’s possible to classify a project (or activity), using different vocabularies. So, it seems reasonable to use the IATI standard to classify any activity that is both generally about Agricultural Services (DAC code 31191) and specifically focused on Fruit Legumes (c_3351 in AGROVOC).
But - is this possible? Is it useful? What challenges does this present for data publishers? We would like to bring data publishers together in December to explore this issue and enhance the quality of data on investments in the sector. To ensure that our plan of action to enhance investment data is both feasible and user-centered, the Open Ag Funding team has consulted a range of development actors, including donors, foundations, in-country civil society organizations, think-tanks and partner governments. We are delighted to have spoken with such a wide range of actors who have identified a clear need for sub-national location data, access to results data, and greater financial traceability,
As many publishers spoke of the capacity challenges they face, we have started to identify the sort of technical assistance we can provide and a range of potential technical solutions. While our formal consultation period has come to a close, we are always keen to receive feedback on your data needs and challenges, so please feel free to get in touch by contacting David Duffeck at dduffeck@interaction.org.

Next steps for this initiative

Using the feedback we have received, we hope to finalize our recommendations to improve data on investments in agriculture in the next few months. We then intend to work closely with organizations throughout 2017 to help them publish quality data and to encourage greater data use. The initiative will do so by providing guidance, bespoke tools and technical assistance. We will have more information on this soon.

In this new blog, Okeke Celestine, Lead Partner of the MSME Advocacy and Support Initiative in Nigeria, discusses the importance of establishing structures and mechanisms for all stakeholders to effectively track and evaluate foreign assistance for agricultural development in Nigeria. Celestine highlights that while Nigeria’s agricultural sector has seen an unprecedented flow of development aid in the last decade, civil society organizations are unable to collaborate with donors, share assessments and help determine what approaches are needed to make aid more effective without a way to accurately understand who is spending what, where and for whom. Identify-Org: New Joint Initiative Launched to Build the Next Key Piece of Open Data Infrastructure

A group of leading open data standards bodies have announced an exciting new collaboration to tackle a shared problem: how to accurately identify organizations. Launched on October 7th at the International Open Data Conference (IODC) in Madrid, the identify-org initiative brings together key organizations driving standards for open data across a range of sectors including contracting, extractives, international aid, agriculture, and philanthropy.
