How-To Articles Roundup

In the last iPad Academy Tip Sheet, I summarized and linked to how-to articles. That proved popular, so here are three more entries with techniques, recommendations and tips for your iPad. I've added comments where necessary or helpful.

Traveling with a Wi-Fi Only iPad

Matt Elliott from CNET offers tips for traveling with your iPad. His tips address making content available offline, saving battery power, being more secure and accessorizing. Here are the topics:
  • Download music and movies before you leave
  • Make Google Maps available offline
  • Turn off Wi-Fi when you aren't using it
  • Take security precautions
  • Accessorize: case, keyboard and splitter
You can listen to music from the iTunes collection on your iPad, or download songs from Amazon Music if you're an Amazon Prime member. You can purchase and download movies and TV shows from iTunes to view offline. If you are an Amazon Prime member, Amazon Video lets you download select titles to your tablet. Several apps allow you to capture podcasts (Internet radio shows) including the Podcasts app already on your iPad. If you plan to use your iPad as a city guide, you can download sections of Google Maps to view offline. This won't give you turn-by-turn directions. It's more like a paper map with zoom features. Elliot's security suggestions are simple but useful. His accessorizing info leads to other CNET content.

Popular Premium Apps Become Free

The content for this article is drawn from my Twitter feed where I post noteworthy articles on Apple and other technology. You can see my most recent tweets in the column on the right. Follow the link above or select the blue Twitter button see more or follow me.

Two popular premium (paid) apps became free the first week of November. Those apps are LastPass and Instapaper.
LastPass is a well known password manager for managing all your logins. Strong passwords are a must to keep your online identity and content secure. No matter where you need your passwords – on your desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone – LastPass will sync them for you, for free. Anything you save to LastPass on one device is then available to you on any other device you use. Instapaper lets you save articles, videos and other web content you find while browsing the Internet. It then syncs this content across your devices so you can read and see what you've saved, wherever and whenever you want. You can also mark up the text of any article with highlights and comments.

My favorite app for this kind of collection is Evernote. I currently have a Premium subscription for $60/year and a few years of content. If I wasn't so invested and comfortable with Evernote, I'd be tempted to return to Instapaper. I was an early adopter of Instapaper but turned to Evernote a few years ago for better features.

The Best Stylus

Over on the WireCutter site, Serenity Caldwell does an extensive review of styluses in The Best Stylus for Your iPad or Other Touchscreen Device. The Wirecutter does research and testing on consumer electronics, using content and data from authoritative sources and input from their own contracted experts and reviewers. I like Wirecutter's thorough evaluation of devices. Founded in September 2011, Wirecutter became part of The New York Times Company in October.

The favorite stylus? The Adonit Mark, costing about $10. See the original article for an in-depth review and much more information.
