Bronco Welcome Week Jan 7-14

Bronco Welcome is a week-long series of events to welcome students to Boise State University.  A full schedule of Bronco Welcome events is available at https://broncowelcome.boisestate.edu/calendar/. 

AAE is partnering with advisors across campus to offer opportunities for students to connect with advisors, explore majors, and learn key study skills. 

Course Repeat vs Career Repeat

  
As a reminder: 
Policy #3190 establishes individual course and career course repeat limits and outlines protocols for securing department approval for repeats.  Explaining the difference concerning course repeat policies versus career repeats can be challenging. We have created this easy reference guide for you to print, post, and share.  

Math Path 2017

Click here to print/view the most up to date Math Path flyer that guides math placement.  Please note that Math 187 has been moved to reflect the prerequisite of Math 143, and Math 189 has been added to the chart, with the prerequisite being Math 170. Categories have also been added to assist aligning scores with placement.

Scores reflect our new math placement test the Accuplacer. College Board Accuplacer Next-Generation Platform has replaced the ACT Compass. The fee is $20 and is offered on a walk-in basis only. Testing Center is open for placement testing: Tuesday through Friday 9:30 AM - 5 PM (Testers must check in by 3:00 PM).

AAE Liaison Roles with CID and Honors


Lauren Rice is now an Advisor in Residence (AiR) for the College of Innovation + Design. Lauren is a key partner in interpreting and promoting CI+D course offerings and programs across campus. She is excited to be part of the CI+D team!

Tiara Thompson will be working with the Honors College as an academic advisor and coordinator. She will see Honors students for topics such as major exploration, four-year plans, and career development. She will also work with the existing Honors staff to streamline Honors programming and messaging among colleges. 



ACADEMIC (ACAD) Spring Courses


AAE is excited to offer Spring courses that help students build academic skills, craft career, financial, and life goals, and rebuild their confidence after a tough semester.  Please encourage your students to consider these courses as investments in their success that will have long-term payoffs. Click here to print/share flyer of all classes, click on individual courses for more detailed info on each course.
  • ACAD 101: Academic Success Special Topics for First Year Students. Sections for international students, Veterans, and First Year students
  • ACAD 102:  Academic Recovery and Success.This two-credit course supports students in making satisfactory academic progress in their current courses and improving their cumulative GPAs by examining the behaviors and mindsets associated with academic success. Section 001: Tues 8:35-10:15am; 002: Wed 5:35-7:15pm
  • ACAD 105-001: Reading and Study Strategies. 3 credits, P/F. Back by popular demand! Students learn study strategies and then demonstrate how they apply those strategies in their other courses.
  • ACAD 106-4001: Library Research. 1st 8 wk, 1 credit, P/F, online.  Students learn the library research process, plagiarism and citing sources, and gain proficiency locating, using and evaluating diverse information resources. 
  • ACAD 107-4001, 4002, 4003: Preparing for Online Learning. Offered every 5 wks, 1 credit, P/F. Covers the computer/Internet literacy, technology management, online communications, organization, and time management necessary for success in taking classes online. 
  • ACAD 108-4001: Career and Life Planning. Online, 2nd 8 week. FULL! 
  • ACAD 197-4001: Financial Wellness in College. 2 credits, Graded.  Students examine how their background, experiences, values, goals, and decisions impact their financial future and gain knowledge in key areas of financial wellness in college.

College of Innovation and Design Spring Offerings 


College of Innovation and Design offers professionally applied electives to maximize student experience and propel students in their careers.  Here are a couple of electives available starting Spring 2017. Full list available at https://cid.boisestate.edu/spring/

The Art of Java (2 credits): Partnered with a talent acquisition company Revature, this intro to coding class is specifically geared toward non-STEM majors with an added value of in-class mentorship and team time. The class is paced starting with real-world 100-level coding up to 300-level depending on the pace of the student. If a student completes the full sequence of coding classes either now or later, the student has the opportunity to attend a 12-week paid bootcamp hosted by Revature upon completion of any college degree. After the bootcamp there is a 90% job-placement rate with a starting salary of $60- $70k. 

Professional Skills (3 credits): Professional Skills is a high-impact career readiness course. It offers valuable business skills for all majors. Topics include project management, design thinking, personal finance, Excel, oral communication and more. 

NOTE: All CI+D classes are listed as Bridge to Career special topics in the Peoplesoft class search function.

The summer class schedule is available on my.boisestate or as a pdf on the summer website (summer.boisestate.edu ). Open enrollment for summer classes begins February 21st at 12:01am.

Welcome New Advising Staff! 


Cathlene McGraw (pronouns: she/her/hers) joined the College of Arts and Sciences Center for Advising and Student Success this December. She will be advising first and second year students in Communications, Music and Theater Arts. Cathlene holds a Masters of Science in College Student Services Administration from Oregon State University. She is joining Boise State from the University of Oregon where she served as a College of Business academic advisor and as a program coordinator in their first year, residential program. Her previous experience advising queer and transgender students ignited Cathlene's interest in first year experiences and retention/persistence.  She is an enthusiastic beginner Cross-Fitter, a mom to the two most attractive children in the universe and a very medium bike rider. Thomas Kimble, M.A - Thomas has joined the College of Health Sciences Student Services and Academic Advising unit as an Academic Advisor for Pre-Med, Pre-Vet, and Pre-Dent students. Thomas received both his B.A. in Secondary Education and his M.A. in Higher Education Student Affairs at Western Michigan University. Row the Boat! For the past two years, Thomas has gained experience working with the LGBTQIA+ community and advised engineering students at his prior institution. Thomas is thrilled to be in Boise and at Boise State University. He is looking forward to seeing what this town has to offer and the many opportunities that will come his way while working at Boise State University. David Liddell has joined the College of Business and Economics Advising Services team. He graduated from Boise State in 2012 with an undergraduate degree in Communication and certificate in Public Relations. Prior to joining the COBE advising team, David worked nine years with the Intensive English Program advising additional language learners.  In his spare time he enjoys spending time with family and friends, summer time activities, and hanging out with his yellow-lab puppy Osha (aw-sha). David can be reached at davidliddell@boisestate.edu or 426-3859.

Natalie Newell is the Academic Advisor for the Bachelor of Applied Science program at Boise State. In 2015, Natalie earned her BA in Communication with an emphasis in Organizational and Relational Studies from Boise State University. Prior to finishing her degree, Natalie was a Second Class Petty Officer, AD2(AW), with the United States Navy for 4 years. Natalie is excited to continue her education by starting the Kansas State Masters program in Academic Advising this January. During her free time, you can find her out in the mountains or foothills with her boarder collie, Ellie. Natalie is excited to be part of the Extended Studies team and believes anyone can earn a degree with enough hard work and determination. Rachel Wike joins the College of Education advising team. After five years of working in Chicago and a lifetime in the midwest, Rachel is thrilled to join the COED team and experience life out west. Rachel did her undergraduate work at Colgate University in New York and her graduate study at the University of Michigan. Monique Halgat is the Academic Advisor for Multidisciplinary Studies program at Boise State University.  Monique earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR and is currently working toward a nontraditional Interdisciplinary MA in Adult Learning, Instructional Design and Organizational Agency.  Monique joined the MDS team after working as a graduation and transcript evaluator in the Boise State Registrar’s Office. She has over ten years of administrative and customer service experience and is dedicated to excellence and accessibility in higher education.
