#WhenGivingGoWild – Spread the Word!

Dear WWFHA Family,

We hope you received our special email yesterday, with a request to help us spread the word with our #WhenGivingGoWild campaign.

Through crowdfunding, our community can reach out to their large circle of friends, family, friends of friends, and fans of the sport to ask everyone for a small amount of support.

We are asking you to do two things:

1. Please contribute what you can afford to donate.
Even a small donation will go a long way to grow girls hockey, subsidize dues, or help the scholarship financial aid program.
A non-profit association, WWFHA operates under IRS code 501(c)(3), Tax ID 75-3028953. Thus, contributions are fully tax-deductible.

2. Spread the word about our campaign!

Please spend five minutes to send the email, a template that we attached in Monday’s email, to your network of family and friends – please add and edit to fit your thoughts about WWFHA and what it means to you and your daughter. If you did not receive the email template, reach out to us and we will send you a copy (
info@wwfha.com)

Please know that:
  • Direct Email—has the biggest impact:
    • Only 0.5% of donations came from outside the organization last year. We want to improve that with your help!
    • Send personally to each individual for the best results.
  • Use Social Media: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – not only ‘like’ our posts, but share them too (be sure to tag @WWFHA) for larger exposure.
Thank you for all you do for the WWFHA Family and to grow the sport!

WWFHA at the Youth Sports Festival

WWFHA joined the Youth Sports Festival at Everett Community College hosted by the Snohomish Country Sports Commission on Saturday, November 12th.

Hundreds of youth sports enthusiasts enjoyed various sports booths. Washington Wild promoted girls' ice hockey with a street hockey shooting gallery and handed out hockey stickers.

Special guest Jake Locker, former University of Washington football quarterback and NFL player, spoke to attendees and posed for pictures to round out the festival.

WWFHA thanks our very own Washington Wild beginner and parents, and representatives from Seattle Women’s Hockey Club (
http://www.swhc.org) and NHL-to-Seattle group (https://nhltoseattle.com/) for supporting our presence at the Festival.

Wild 14U and 12U Rep AA Teams Create Memories: 14U Runner-Up Champs!

The Washington Wild 14U and 12U Rep AA Washington Wild teams participated in the Burnaby Remembrance Day Tournament in Lower Mainland B.C.

The 12U Rep AA team ended the tournament with a 1-3 record in tough competition. The 14U Rep AA team defeated Vancouver 5-1 and Burnaby 3-1, tied Tri-Cities 1-1, and finished round-robin play by defeating Meadow Ridge 5-1. The team advanced to the Championship game and lost to Tri-Cities 3-0 for second place honors.

In the tournament's skills competition, defenseman Aurora Spencer (Lake Stevens, WA) of the 14U Rep AA team earned ‘Hardest Shot’ and Gabriella deVita (Bellevue, WA) of the 12U Rep AA team received ‘Top Goaltender’. Unfortunately the tournament didn’t notify everyone of the competition, otherwise we may have swept the awards like we did last year!

Congratulations on a fantastic weekend to both teams for skating with great effort and character!

Girls' Try Hockey for Free Event Fun!

30-plus brave girls joined us and tried ice hockey for the first time on the nationwide Try Hockey For Free Day on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, as part of Come Play Hockey Month. Registration had to be closed early because this free event was so popular!

WWFHA will host another January 8th. Players and parents alike bore big smiles. Several parents have already pre-registered for the next Girls’ Beginner Hockey 1 Class starting on January 15th, which is now open for all girls age 4 – 9 years old at:
http://www.wwfha.com/beginners-jan-april-2017

Thanks to all the volunteers, coaches and student coaches, that made this huge event happen! The 12U/14U house team was well represented and did a great job mentoring the new players - thank you! It takes a village!

USA Hockey's national Try Hockey For Free Days have introduced more than 116,000 children to the sport over the past six seasons.

The Experts’ Edge

Even Non-stars Shine: Every player has an important role to play in a team's success [Jeff Serowick, USA Hockey]

A SMALL PERCENTAGE FROM EVERY TEAM, from youth hockey all the way to the NHL, is made up of star players. Typically, 80 percent of a team is made up of what I call the “non-stars.”

It’s important for parents to know that even if their son or daughter is not on the first line, scoring the goals or racking up the assists or part of the first defensive pairing, power play or penalty kill, every player who slips on a jersey is an integral part of the hockey team.

I have friends who have enjoyed long and successful NHL careers playing on the third and fourth line. There are many cogs in the wheel that are necessary to make the wheel spin.
Here are some tips for the “non-star players:”

Find out why you should take pride in yourself whatever role you have on the team. Remember, you made that team for a reason, and everybody is an important member and integral to helping the team to victory.

Ask WWFHA

Q: How do people deal with the conflict of holidays and hockey?

A: THE SMELL WAS THE FIRST THING that got me—an odd mixture of crock pot ham, scalloped potatoes and hotel cleaning supplies.

Hours earlier, I had spent the evening attempting to convince my daughter Sophia—8 years old at the time—that yes, the Easter bunny would find us, even in Canada.

That was the year Mr. Cottontail climbed up the ranks of holiday favorites, as he somehow managed to sneak into a strange hotel room, deliver a big basket of chocolate goodies and hide dozens of colored eggs in the hallways for egg hunts.

When you’re a hockey family during the holidays, you learn to create traditions on the fly.

Click here to see examples of holiday traditions from Christie Casciano Burns' article.
