WELCOME
The big news for this month was the club’s 60th anniversary get together. See below for details and a couple of images.
Of note coming up is the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday 11 December at the Taupo Yacht Club. Details are below.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Put aside Sunday 11th December 2016 at the Taupo Yacht Club, 9 Ferry Road, Taupo.
The meeting will start at 11:00am followed by a light lunch at 12:30pm.
We have a couple of positions vacant on the committee for the coming year and are seeking nominations. The positions aren't too onerous but provide a vital role in maintaining the success of the club. Here is the opportunity for you to contribute to the running of the club over the coming years.
We are also tabling a change to the constitution that requires a members vote. So if you are unable to attend then please put in a proxy vote.
As mentioned above we adjourn for lunch and refreshments after the meeting which in itself is a social gathering of members - so don't miss the opportunity to discuss the club finances along with what you want for Christmas. See you there.
AGM details are below. Please download, fill out where appropriate and email back to the Secretary.

CLUB 60th CELEBRATIONS
The Club put on an afternoon get together in Taupo to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the club. It was well attended by over 30 members ranging in age from less than 1 through to 85 along with 1st to 4th generation representation. The afternoon was spread over several hours, copious refreshments, reminiscing, story telling and even some gossip.
Did you know:
• That it was a gas bottle that blew the club up
• That the Parks Board actually owned the lodge in the early days
• That the first part of the club (a small hut) was bought up by a Council truck
• That the main role of the Patron was to provide finance or in kind services (Jim Birnie owned the Spa Hotel…….)
• That the framing for the Lodge was milled by members
• That metal for the concrete water tanks and part of the foundations came from the Whakapapanui River just beside the bridge above the Chateau
• That some of the other metal came from a Parks Board stockpile at the Top of the Bruce
• That the concrete water tanks leaked back then as well
A recurring theme when talking to some of the more experienced members was the notion of ‘ownership’ bought about by their contribution to the building not only of the Lodge but the Club. We need to continue this theme with not only our active participation in events but a recognition of the effort these earlier members contributed to get the club to where it is today.
END OF SEASON WORK PARTY
Saturday and Sunday 12/13 November
This is the first of the 2 main work parties that we hold in the off season. This was an opportunity for club members to help towards the general up keep of the Lodge.
We had pretty poor attendance for the weekend with only 9 people attending. The next one is prior to next season in May and we require a better turnout. We rely on members to maintain the club and without your input we will have to pay for commercial/professionals to do this for us with resulting price increases.
The Work Party is over the 2 days of the weekend with free accommodation and meals available on both Friday and Saturday night. The Works Officer will assign jobs for the weekend and in most cases this revolves around a spring clean. Duties include cleaning (windows, storeroom, bathrooms kitchen, exterior etc), firewood stacking, minor painting/touch-ups and so on.
This is the opportunity for new members to get to know the workings of the club as well as new senior members meeting their membership criteria.
We see the work parties as an extension of each individuals ‘ownership’ of the Lodge and as each member treats the lodge as they would their own home then we will easily see another 60 years of use (well some of the juniors will).
SKI CLUB APPAREL
A reminder that we have softshell jackets and merino tops available with the club logo embroided on the left breast These are available here. Hoodies and T-shirts will be available from April next year in time for the 2017 season.
LODGE LAYOUT
We are still after ideas from members as to how we tidy up the area on the east wall in the lounge where the open fire used to be (where Julie sits, trophy cabinet is). We would like ideas that can incorporate a workstation type setup so that the custodian has somewhere to work comfortably from. Ideas to the Works Officer or any committee member.
CONTACT INFORMATION UPDATE
It has come to our attention that some members are not receiving their newsletters. If you know of anyone not receiving theirs or would like other family members to receive newsletters as well, please send your updated contact details to secretary@tauposki.org.nz Please also update your phone numbers.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
We also need to bring to the attention of all members the impact of recent Health and Safety legislation. It is up to all of us to be responsible and this is even more important in our Lodge with the risks of fire, storms and eruptions (amongst other things). To help facilitate this we are holding nightly club safety sessions (5 mins max).
UNPAID SUBSCRIPTIONS
There are a few members who have not paid this years subs. Could you please make an effort and pay as soon as possible. Please contact the Treasurer (urgently!!!)
SUMMER CUSTODIANS
We are starting to generate interest from non member individuals and groups for summer accommodation. As we do not allow non members to stay without a member present we are wondering if there are any members out there who would be interested in being a volunteer custodian for short periods of time. This could be from a weekend to up to 5 or so days. We would like to establish a register of members who could be interested. If you are then please contact the Booking Officer.
SUMMER LODGE USE
Lets not forget the year is 12 months long and the ski season is only 4 months. This leaves an incredible 8 months in which to stay at the Lodge and mountain bike, tramp, hunt, fish, go caving, climb to the crater, have a coffee in the highest cafe in NZ, spend Christmas, Easter or any other weekend with friends and family.
Summer charges per night:
- Member $11.
- Non member accompanied by member $15
- Full lodge exclusive use for Non-member groups: charge $255 plus $100 per day for custodian.
Book now.
