Opportunity to Be a Worship Helper

Refresher Training Sessions 11/20 & 11/27

There will be refresher sessions on 11/20 & 11/27 for assisting ministers, lectors, ushers, communion assistants, greeters, crucifers, and torch bearers.  Did you wonder what is involved in serving in one or more of these responsibilities?  Expand your comfort zone – meet in the sanctuary at 9:30 am or contact Jim Zieche or Karen Kranz for information. One of the ways that Jesus showed us his love was by washing his disciples’ feet.  That was the job of a servant, but Jesus willingly took up that job. Show your love by being a worship assistant!

Lessons for Sunday, November 20

First Reading: Jeremiah 23:1-6

Today’s reading builds on the common ancient Near Eastern metaphor of the king as shepherd. Judah’s unjust rulers have caused their people, their “flock,” to be scattered. Nevertheless, the Lord will raise up a new and righteous shepherd who will rule a restored Judah.

Psalm 46

I will be exalted among the nations. (Ps. 46:10)

Second Reading: Colossians 1:11-20

An early Christian hymn praises the mystery of the political, personal, and mystical Christ, the one who was present at creation and is eternally reigning with God.

Gospel: Luke 23:33-43

Amid scoffing and slander from those who sarcastically call him Messiah and king, Jesus reveals that to be Messiah and king is to give one’s life for others. Here he uses his power to welcome a despised sinner to paradise but puts his own death into God’s hands.

Church Humor...

A boy was watching his father, a pastor, write a sermon.
"How do you know what to say?" he asked.
"Why, God tells me."
"Oh, then why do you keep crossing things out?"
Do you have some church humor you'd like to share? We would love to share it too! Send your humor to Lisa in the office.
