Two Veterans Day services will be  held today at First Presbyterian Church, one at 11 a.m. and another at 7 p.m. Receptions will be held after each service at the Mt. Holly Historical Society next door to the church. Thank you to all who have served our country.

Annual Meeting is Sunday!

Please gather in the Parish Hall at 9:45 for the regular annual meeting of the congregation. Remember, we need a quorum to conduct business, so please attend.
The purpose of the meeting is to elect five members to the Congregation Council. Nominated this year are: David Berg, Kathy Drumm, Nancy Faulkner, Linda Hamrick, Andrew Matznick, Ruth Neely, Teresa Neely, Diane Perry and Tom Wallace.

Other items of business include adopting a budget for 2017 (copies were distributed last Sunday and will be available at the meeting), receiving a copy of the Lutheran Denomination Study Report and other reports from the council. Each voting member family will receive one copy of the Lutheran Denomination Study Report. When you enter the Parish Hall for the meeting on Sunday, members of the study group will have the reports. Each has your name on it so please ask for your specific report. These are lengthy and expensive to reproduce, so please keep your report available for all the upcoming meetings and for your intentional study. If you cannot attend the annual meeting, copies will either be mailed or e-mailed.

Offering Envelopes Available

When you come to church on Sunday, please check the table across from the church office and pick up your 2017 offering envelopes. When you do get them, please note that your offering envelope number has changed for next year and beyond. We were able to significantly lower the costs for the envelopes by assigning new number. This applies only to those who use the offering envelopes. All those who are giving through the Vanco online giving service or are giving by bank draft do not receive weekly offering envelope and are assigned numbers in an entirely different category.
Please continue to use your current envelopes through December. The new envelopes and numbering system goes into effect on January 1, 2017. Thank so much for your cooperation.

  • At 6 p.m. on November 20 representatives of the ELCA, NALC, and hopefully the LCMS will meet with us to talk about their respective Lutheran denominations. Council urges you to prayerfully, carefully and deliberately study the report of the Lutheran Denomination Study Group and come prepared to ask your questions to Rev Nathan Yoder of the NALC, N.C. Call to prayer and discernment for our future direction

The sanctuary will be open for prayer and meditation about the momentous decisions before us for three consecutive Tuesday evenings beginning Tuesday, November 15 at 7 p.m. The other dates are Tuesday, November 22 and 29 from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. The Congregation Council urges you to carefully, prayerfully and deliberately study the documents and to take advantage of these Tuesday opportunities to come together to pray about the future direction of Good Shepherd.
First Vote to Disaffiliate from the ELCA
The first vote to consider disaffiliating from the ELCA will happen on Sunday, December 4 at 9:45 a.m. in the Parish Hall. A quorum is necessary. The vote must pass by a two-thirds margin to be successful. If this vote is successful, another will be scheduled after a 90 day waiting period; this vote must also pass by a two-thirds margin. If both are successful, the decision to disaffiliate will go to the N.C. Synod Council as the next step in the process. If the first vote does not succeed, a waiting period is imposed before the matter can be reconsidered.
Again, it is critical that all voting members carefully consider the study, attend all the informational meetings, and come prepared to make a decision about the future of Good Shepherd on December 4. Voting members are those who:
  • Are confirmed members of Good Shepherd, and
  • Have made a contribution of record between January 1, 2015 and October 30, 2016 and
  • Have a record of communing between January 1, 2015 and October 30, 2016.
If you haven’t already, please pick up a bag to fill for the Circle # 5 Thanksgiving in a Bag project. A list of items to include is stapled to each bag along with an envelope for a check for $12 to purchase the meat for the meals. November 20 is the deadline to return the filled bags which will be distributed through the Mount Holly CRO. Let’s help our hungry neighbors to have a good Thanksgiving meal.

Baptists offer Thanksloving Meal

Thanksgiving Day from 11 - 2
First Baptist invites all those who will be alone to join them for their annual Thanksloving Feast at the church on Thanksgiving Day between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. If you know of someone who is homebound and would enjoy a meal, please call ahead to First Baptist and a full Thanksgiving meal can be delivered.

A community-wide Thanksgiving service will be Sunday, November 20, 2016. We are invited to join other Christians in Mt. Holly to uplift our thanks to God for the abundant blessings he bestows on us daily. This year’s service will be held on November 20 at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church across the street. Rev. Brian Hovey invites us to join them and for our choir to join the community choir in singing “Come Ye Faithful People Come.” Rev. Kendell Cameron of First Baptist will bring the message. November is a busy day in the life of Good Shepherd but please add this service to your schedule. Giving thanks with our neighbors enriches the meaning of the Thanksgiving season.

Gospel Message for November 13, 2016

Twenty-sixth  Sunday after Pentecost

Prediction

or

Promise

The tone of today’s gospel is ominous. “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes” (Luke 21:10). These words are ominous not because what they describe will happen, but because these things are happening right now—and have been since these words were written down almost two thousand years ago.

Our tendency to focus on the difficult portions of today’s gospel text causes us anxiety at best and paranoia at worst. Following today’s worship, we might reasonably predict that a few people will be looking for signs of the end of all things!

If we listen with trusting hearts instead of fearful ones, we can hear hope even in this text. Although Jesus describes what may befall his disciples in the end time—arrest, persecution, imprisonment, betrayal, hatred, death—he assures his disciples and us that God will not let these things be the final word. We hear promise more than prediction.

When we pay attention to the signs that Jesus gives through his life, we will more fully understand where Christ eventually goes: the cross. At the cross Jesus will be betrayed, his friends will abandon him, his name will be hated with shouts of “Crucify him!,” and there will be an earthquake. At the cross the temple of Christ’s body, the dwelling place of God, will be left in ruin, and then buried in a cave sealed with a stone.

That stone will topple at the resurrection, thrown down by the power of life and love, and we receive the assurance that even death cannot hold the Crucified One. Even while the nations rage, we are safe in Christ’s resurrection, down to the hair on our head.
